V8 Swap Throttle Issue

I'm sure you guys have run into this and there's an easy fix...

Pulled the 230 6cyl and added a mild 355, alum intake and Edlebrock carb. I extended the stock linkage rod from the carb to the firewall arm and I cant get full throttle and it sticks open about 3/4 throttle. I used the "large" hole on the carb arm and fabricated a plastic bushing to take up the space as the hole is quite a bit larger than the stock arm.

Any ideas?

Re: V8 Swap Throttle Issue

I had the same issue-the arm on the firewall is longer on V8 trucks. I got a V8 arm & it all is good-it puts the linkage higher, better in line w/the carb on an 8.

Re: V8 Swap Throttle Issue

I got a v 8 arm if you need one, I went to a under the floor cable for my set up. Safer set up in my book, the rods can still get bound up under hard tq due to the twisting action of the engine. I think my pedal and cable kit was under 100 bucks. The old 383 stuck the throttle a few times, so on the frame off I knew how I was not going to do it again

Re: V8 Swap Throttle Issue

yeah the arm plays a big difference, i had a factory 327 in my truck and when i swapped a 355 over i still had to change the arm and the linkage rod,

I just found this old thread:

Looks to be a great solution/option

Mr Gasket #1512. I took the bushing you see between the two washers and opened the center with a 1/4" drill bit. The bushing has a lip on one side (looks like one of the "washers" in the picture), and fits perfectly in the throttle linkage on the carburetor. The throttle rod will fit right through, and using a new washer on the other side of the linkage you can use a simple cotter pin to go through the throttle rod and you're done! All you need now is a throttle return spring.

This photo is highlighting the fast idle solenoid, but it also shows the throttle linkage:

Re: V8 Swap Throttle Issue

I did the same as markeb01 and it works grate. I extended the arm that comes out of the fire wall a little in order to give it more travel and to give it a little more clearance. You can pick the rod and rod ends up at the local hardware store. I got mine from OHS.

Re: V8 Swap Throttle Issue

I converted to a cable using a cherokee pedal assembly that I modified for the stock pedal.I used a throttle cable from a 73 c10.Cost me about $15 and much safer.

Re: V8 Swap Throttle Issue

I did it similar to Mark's but sence I relocated my motor back 4" and lower 1". I still had trouble with it not getting full throttle and binding up. I had to bend a small dog leg in it to keep the rod at the angle needed in reverence to the throttle linkage.

Re: V8 Swap Throttle Issue

I used a pedal out of a mid 80's chevy truck with a cable instead of a rod. It bolts to the firewall with 3 bolts, works great.
