Where to mount the battery, 1952 GMC?

I have a 1952 GMC on an S10 frame with a sbc. I'm trying to decide where to mount the battery since the under floor spot has frame in the way. I could mount it on the firewall except the air and heat lines are there. It could be mounted in the inner fender but that area is not made for the extra wieght. Back in the truck bed would work but it just kind of setts there in the open. I have no experience with the dry cell type battery that could mount under the front seat. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks.

Re: Where to mount the battery, 1952 GMC?

wibas, I am going to mount the battery on the outside frame rail under the bed towards the cab. I am going to make a drop down battery box and put the kill switch down there too. I did not want it under the hood or in the cab so that is where I can up with. I use welding cable and solder the ends on.

Re: Where to mount the battery, 1952 GMC?

From experience with my own truck under the hood looks ugly and is always either in the way or getting battery residue on the engine or firewall.

Also it is a real hassle having the 12 volt battery under the floor board.

This time around I am going to build a tool box at the front of the bed that will hold the battery on the right side and have room for the jack, tools and clean up supplies on the other side. It will most likely be made of wood that matches the bed with stainless boat hardware on it from this outfit http://www.marinepartdepot.com/index.html They have pretty nice marine ss hinges and latches and other stuff for friendly prices and their service is great. I get a lot of the stainless pieces for my sailboat from them.

You can run a smaller battery (group 51 or 51r) and tuck it nearly anywhere.

although I didn't go the S10 route I ended up using the drop-down battery box that CPP sells.

It tucks the battery nicely up under the truck.

Some folks hate it but I used a tractor box and put it behind the front seat since I used an S10 Blazer tank in our S10 frame.

Re: Where to mount the battery, 1952 GMC?

One more option is to build a battery box behind the seat that will hold a group 48 or 49 (wider) battery that is intended to go under the back seats of Audi, BMW and Mercedes among others. They aren't cheap but are low profile and have a vent tube setup to vent the battery gasses through the floor. That requires a small hole and grommet but that way you could have a battery behind the seat that was intended to be inside the passenger compartment of a vehicle.

Re: Where to mount the battery, 1952 GMC?

I went through all my options as well. I decided to put mine under the hood to save money. Granted my engine compartment is FULL, it turned out rather well I think. What I would have loved to do is put it on the frame rail behind the bed/fender skirt and made the skirt panel flip out for access. I edited my post with some new pictures this is a fininshed look. Only have to put my air filter and my hood latch panel.

1952ssr Does kind of make the engine compartment full but keeps all the cables short and efficient. That's a good idea to go behind the apron under the bed. Thank.

I looked at that too with mine, but the s10 frame is too wide back there for the battery to fit. Mine's under the hood, sunken into the inner fender:

Mine's "Frenched" into the inner fender just like BlueJeep's.
