What Did You Do At Work Today?

I don't know if anybody has ever done this so I'd like to. I have a project I'm workin on at work and I'd like to share it with you. If you do something cool share it!
I will preface this by sayin that I did check the site and I have determined that this is a proper place to thread this. This isn't a personal project and I don't normally look at anything other that the 67-72 MB. So if a moderator moves it sorry.
I am working on a 2002 745Li. This job pays me 40 hours labor to replace a .92 o-ring! It costs the customer $5000 in labor and $574 in parts. Let me state that I am not ripping the customer off! This is the going rate and although there are quicker ways of doing it I have to do it in a BMW approved manner.
The first picture shows that I have removed the bumper skin, bumper reinforcement and cooling module (fan, radiator, oil cooler, trans cooler and power steering cooler). The second shows the belts, tensioners, water pump, water cooled alternator and intake manifold removed along with associated wiring harnesses and hoses. The third is a close up of the motor just before I clocked out and the last is a picture of the small hole that coolant leaks from because of the o-ring degredation. I'll post more as I go along.
REMEMBER! If you do something cool (yes a office ceiling full of sharpened pencils counts) POST IT!!

Re: What Did You Do At Work Today?

Wow, that one would be a tough one to handle the bill for....

....I guess whenever I see a 745 for sale cheap...look for this because they don't want to pay $6K to fix it

Re: What Did You Do At Work Today?

BTW...the repair bill is more than I've ever paid for a truck or for my current used Honda Odyssey which has done well for us for the last three years with $250 total repairs needed other than general maintenance....

Re: What Did You Do At Work Today?

A coworker of mine has a 7-series that is in the shop for some sort of engine o-ring replacement. He said he was happy to ONLY be paying $1200 after getting some sort of deal. He said they originally wanted $5000 to do it! I didn't believe him when he told me, but now I guess it's true.

Re: What Did You Do At Work Today?

Would not wanna comment on deals struck by any dealership or BMW themselves.
There are two o-ring leaks on this motor, coolant and oil. Oil leak repair is roughly $1500. It will be covered during my repair because I have to remove the Dr's motor mount arm (ear?) and I will show pics when I get there.
Again, If the walls have ears. These repairs are facts and I not smearing BMW. I am showing how in-depth and cool my job can be.

Mowed the lawn, finished painting my tranny, emailed the owner of the truck I'm lookin' at, watched a couple episodes of Truck U. Ah, the few perks of being unemployed.

Re: What Did You Do At Work Today?

yesterday I pulled a Lawn Mower looking thing 13 miles down a highway to remove reflective pavement marking tabs. ( the ones that make the flipping noise when your tires hit them). about 4mph with strobe light and flashers on..... stop every 2000 ft or so to empty hopper. ......this County that we are in now specs in that they be removed, instead of left to break off from traffic. less litter in ditches

coffee, camels, cooler, not much traffic. ......... life is good.

thanks for listening, kent

Re: What Did You Do At Work Today?

Didn't post this job yesterday. Here are some that may blow your mind!

The first one is after the upper and main timing covers were removed. The oring in question is front and center.

The second is a close up of the o ring.

The third is an exploded view of the water cooled alternator, the water pump and the mounts. The small black tube is the feed for the alternator. The return is on top of the housing.

The last one is how it looked before I left work today.

Re: What Did You Do At Work Today?

I have built a few newer hi-tech engines like that because no one else in the shop would touch them. While I don't mind doing those for a change, I still prefer a good old OHV V8 compared to something with multiple timing chains. Timing some of those new engine can be a nitemare. I don't envy you.

My job is intersting and awarding(not). I clock in at 1730 and toss around batteries ranging from 15lbs-175lbs as fast as I can. In two years I have never been awarded a lunch or break. I clock out at 1630. My job sucks but it's a paycheck for now.

I've seen the damage those things can do to cars and a little girl glad you are pulling them out.

Yeahh, the department of labor mandates you get a lunch break, and two breaks. You may choose not to take them, but they have to give them to you. What the hell kinda place are you workin' it?
