Gas Mileage

I just completed a 2000 round trip with my 94 4x4 Burb with the auto trans and 3:73's. I picked up some rims and was pulling a trailer and when I put the works on a scale the Burb and trailer with the bike on weighed 8200 lbs. I averaged about 65mph and was sometimes fighting some heavy winds and sometimes getting pushed by them. I averaged 12.5 MPG Imp gallons which converts to 10.4 MPG in US gallons. This is the first highway trip I've taken with the Burb and I'm wondering does the mileage figures sound right to you?

Pulling a trailer?? I suppose that is correct. Additional use of the gas peddle makes a big difference.

Re: Gas Mileage

i think thats a good estimate. pulling a trailer in my 89 i average about 6-7 mpg but my trailer loaded weighs about 7000 so you pretty close.

Yea that doesn't sound horrible with towing a trailer and having to fight those stupid head winds!

Re: Gas Mileage

Greg....8200-lbs...sounds like you did okay. I get not liking the mileage, but it is what it is. If your trip was trouble-free, sounds like you did great!

I wasn't expecting big gas mileage numbers and am okay with the mileage. I have maybe 6000 tied up I my Burb and it'll do the same things ( work ) as a new 60,000 Burb and I dont think the new one would get anymore than 2 or 3mpg more than me, if that. As far as how the trip went I had to detour a bit because I would normally would have come back through Minot, North Dakota which has had disastrous flooding there and the surrounding area this past week.

Re: Gas Mileage

That doesn't sound out of line for that rig. The 4wd Burb is heavy by itself, then the trailer and load. 10 is normal. Your TBI engine should get 15 or so highway by itself I imagine.
My 97 K Burb has the Vortec engine in it and gets 14 around town and 19 highway regularly. I tow a 27' camper a few times a year and yes the mpg goes down. But like you I know the newer models won't get much better mpg than mine and it's paid for. I do take comfort in knowing my wife is in a large safe vehicle and that's worth a lot.

Its funny you mention the safety factor driving a big rig like the Burb. I got in an accident with a train a few years ago and if I would have been driving anything les than the Burb I'm sue I wouldn't have walked away like I did.

You most likely could gain that 3-4 mpg by keeping your speeds down to 55 mph. Aerodynamics come into play a lot when towing so at slower speeds, you would be pushing a lot less air around.

Feather the gas peddle.... You can go the same speed using less peddle. It is easy to use more fuel without going any faster when pulling a trailer.

I have hauled 40' Off-Shore Powerboats with a dually, and the trailer was heavier than the truck, it's self! I can go up a grade, back off the peddle and hold the same speed.

Let the transmission show you what your speed should be. Find a "sweet spot".

Saves gas....... keeps temp at a reasonable level. (both tranny / engine)

Re: Gas Mileage

I used cruise control as much as possible on my trip and I was running on fairly flat land the whole time and yes driving at 55 I know, would help.

I know you can't zoom on the crunched Burb pics but if you could you'd see the the front plate says "Bad to the Bone" , you know, like the song !!

Go green?????

Compare a Prius death trap, to this beastie.... I couldn't resist parking next to it at the LUX Hotel in Brentwood ( movie star town near Beverly Hills)

Ya...ya... It's an F650 Conversion, but it was all custom.

As I said before.... In an accident, the bigger car wins.
