Emissions testing Arizona

I was unable to find a thread where one 85 owner was able to bypass the Arizona Emissions test.If anyone has any ideas how this is done I would appreciate it. I only drive about thirty-five hundred miles a year. Personally I think the law is crap. Only residents of Maricopa county (Phoenix) and Pima County (Tucson) have to put up with this. Maricopa county is so big that if you live for enough from the city you are exempt.
Real fair!

Re: Emissions testing Arizona

hey phil, I have an 84 that doesn't get emissions. if you have a collector/show vehicle and you register it as a collecter/show vehicle it becomes emissions exempt. to register a vehicle as collector you would have to get collector car insurance on it. if the truck is an 82 or older, most collector car insurance companies, like grundy, will insure it. I myself went through my regular insurance company. To do it that way, I had to get my truck appraised, and prove it was collector worthy. hope this helps.

Re: Emissions testing Arizona

I got my '85 GMC emissioned and passed with the new 400 hp 502, they really didnt do much that I could see through the window of the emissions bay. Is AZ pretty strict? More so the Colorado? Mine is a SRW one ton, maybe thats a difference , remember 20 some years ago it used to make a diff. with the higher GVW trucks in this area.

One thing you can do if your willing to drive up to somewhere in northern arizona or even southern arizona once every year or two and pick up your registration is to get a PO Box in a non-emissions county. For example coconino the county i live in is emissions exempt basically every county in arizona except maricopa and pima are emissions exempt.i cant recall the rates off the top of my head i looked into the cost recently but getting a PO Box up here is fairly inexpensive.
