Rear Bumper option??? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am looking at purchasing another truck and this one has what the owner says is a rare option. He calls it an extra heavy duty bumper. It rolls around and attaches to the bottom of the rear quarter of the bed. Was this actually an option for 1969? The truck is a 69 long bed with 396BB factory silver and white paint. I am told that color was limited for 69 also. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a dealer-installed bumper, to me. Different dealers in different geographic areas, had step bumpers that were regional in their distribution. I've seen plenty over the last 55+ years that wrapped around, as you said, from the back of the truck to the back corner of a stepside fender, for instance.

He thinks that it is rare because it's the only one he's seen. A lot of dealers had step bumpers made and their names were cast into the face of the bar. Other dealers didn't do the name thing and bought step bumpers that were plain.....and affixed their dealership name somewhere else on the truck.

Tell him he can keep the bumper and deduct $500 from the selling price. Then, he can put it on eBay as a "Rare" item.

Yes I don't actually like the bumper and the issue is the rear qtr will have a hole in it if I remove it for a chrome one. I will have to see what I can do.

Not really rare but I would like to hope that the sides of the bumper arent bolted into the side of the bed.

Apparently I am being told it is bolted to the bed. If it is it is a shame. Might stop me for purchasing the truck. Other than that a nice truck form texas. 396BB truck with air but no factory radio, Funny.

lots of different styles of step bumpers i have seen some go allmost to the wheel well and bolted to the box not rare at all though

It was designed to protect the rear corners of the bed. Looks like it worked.

Pull the bumper, fill the holes, touch up the paint and put a chrome bumper on it.
