grille help?

Has anyone done anything one off or custom to a 71 or 72 chevy. I have a 71 that I just put a stainless tube insert in it after I painted it, but it's just not doing it for me anymore. I seen a 67 grille on ebay that actually said retrofit into a 72, but I couldn't see how with the front of the hood and fenders like they are.. Post up some pics, I'm thinking of doing sometime crazy with mine..

Re: grille help?

OK... Here is an idea using JCD's black expanded metal as a backdrop... then cutting out a design, powdercoating a contrasting color and mounting it to the background but raised. Throw a couple lights in there as well .... please be kind as I only used MS Paint for my photo-chop ....

Re: grille help?

I had always been a huge fan of the stock 72 grills, but after about 15 years and having many of them I now think they are my least favorite including the GMC. WOW I cant believe I just sais a GMC grill looks better than a Chevrolet....I must still be asleep! So, for the last 5 years of building these trucks I have done everything I could to avoid using a 71/72 grille as there isnt much you can do to "dress it up" and i have yet to see any alterations that improve it to suit my taste. I have not seen how the 67-68 retrofit you mentioned above works or looks but I bet it would be worth a shot!!!

Listed below is what we started doing.

Keep your fenders and hood and do a 69/70, Most folks will swap the bumper.
Swap the grill, fenders, bumper, harness, and radiator support and make it a GMC.
Swap the grille, fenders, hood, bumper and radiator support and make it a 68.

The above is purely my opinion and you know what they say about opinions.

Re: grille help?

I had seen one guy on here that was fitting a 77 or so Chevy van grille in his shell. It looked like it should come out pretty cool.

Re: grille help?

Here's a 72 that was made to look a little different.

I think they were just trying to decide what to do about the "bowtie" when they put the tubes in.

It does give it a different look without that one tube though.

Re: grille help?

I haven't seen anything I like better than the stock eggcrate, but the polished outer grill can really make them stand out.

I thought about building a custom eggcrate out of aluminum and polishing it, but it sounds like a lot of work.

Re: grille help?

i had thought of this before but didn't like the idea the more i pictured but you may. i've seen stainless with holes from 1/2" to 1 1/2" dia. all over. you could overlay the factory insert or use it by itself and it would like the "holy roller" grills that were popular for newer trucks a few years ago. add some lights behind it for a different look.
