tandem lock

I just bought a 1963 c-10 and it says "tandem lock" on the dash, what's this for?

Chevy used the same basic dash cluster for all trucks. The Tandem lock and Overspeed lights weren't used in the smaller trucks.

My guess is that your instrument cluster gauge came out of a tandem axle truck. (Dump truck or such). Might of been switched out at some point in its life with a gauge from a big truck. A tandem axle is a group of two or more axles situated close together. Trucks designs will use such a configuration to provide a greater weight capacity than a single axle.

Re: tandem lock

Other web posts indicate the Tandem Lock light is an indicator for a two speed rear axle found in C60-C80 trucks.

Re: tandem lock

i agree the gauge cluster came out of a larger tandem axle truck.there would be a switch on the dash (sometimes an air switch)to lock up the tandems, like 4 wheel drive if you will.highway tractors still have these switches today.helps you get out of some nasty situations, mud snow or even if you get hung up on a steep driveway incline or something and the front axle is off the ground and whheels are spinning inthe air,hit the switch and the rear axle locks in and away you go!

Re: tandem lock

the clusteer is probably original to the truck, on the smaller trucks the tandem lock and overspeed indicators just wern't lit up...

Re: tandem lock

Concur with jonz - I believe all dash clusters were the same and you only got the switch, etc if you actually had a tandem truck.
Here's what I did with my tandem lock indicator...

Re: tandem lock

Thanks everyone. I know everything's original on my truck, it had set-up on blocks in a barn for over 30 years. I used to have a '66 and knew that it didn't have a tandem gauge on dash, so it surprised me when I saw that this '63 did have one. Do all '63 models have them on the dash?

Re: tandem lock

The tandem lock light came on small trucks with the factory gauge style clusters. Trucks that came from the factory with warning or "dummy" lights didn't have the tandem lock light option.
