Gas Tank Cover Install

Is there any pictures if this carboard tank cover available, or installation instructions available? I'm trying to install one and it looks like I have to either cut it up or bend the crap out of it to fit. Also, was this really an option or was I just suckered again.

I have yet to install one, & I've never seen any traces of one in the dozens of these old trucks I've had. But looks to me you have to bend it a bunch-those tabs at the top go behind the tank.

It is a cover for the back of the seat not the tank, it was on trucks with a BBW...........gotcha Kieth



well I guess I was wrong, but the bbw cab did have a cover over the back of the seat because the springs showed thru the back window. Kieth

My 65 small rear window still has what appears as a factory one covering the tank. The tabs do fold back behind tank. Here are a few crappy cel pics

That looks like a lot of bending and I'm not sure I could get the seam right. Thanks for the pic's. I see now what the creases in the upper sides are for. They fold inside each other to allow for the bend over the the tank. It looks like you could easily turn this into junk just getting it installed.

cool, a pic-as I said down here they are long gone-mice, etc all get them I guess. My burb had all the firewall pad relocated to the tailgate & the body mount pockets...

I have never installed one of these my self but when making templates for custom sheetmetal work such as inner fenders I put my card board in my brake to get nice clean straight lines bent in it. Dependng on how thick or hard it is to keep the bend in it you could also try laying a straight edge on your bend line and scoring it lightly with a box cutter to help it bend where you want it.

I guess I could use a brake to do it. Though I don't know if it's wide enough. Now that I see how it's supposed to go I'll try it but I pretty sure I'll make a mess of it and tos it out. It's not too straght forward on how it's installed and they didn't give any directions in the box. I gues I could look up the company and see if they have a instalation guide

I called the people who make the cover. I asked how it went on and he said he didn't have a guide and thought it went between the window and then folded down. After talking to him for a few minuets he said that I should try it and if I screwed it up to call him and he would get me another one since he should know how to put it in. Pretty good service so far we'll see if I can put it in and if he'll follow through if I screw it up.

I looked at my build photos and only found some outside edge ones. I will get better ones tomorrow. I just did the cover in April. The tabs at the top slide up in the ribs on the back wall above the tank, and the sides bow in towards the corners. It is kind of a nightmare. I got a couple small tears in the cheap cardboard where the ground wire cutout is and the fuel line cutout is. I recommend back rolling it for a day and ensure it is flat prior to starting it. It sounds strange but you need to bow it top to bottom and at the same time side to side to get it tucked in all around. Better photos will make it more clear.

Every truck made had one, but the vast majority went to heck a long time ago.
Now, these only show up in trucks that were pampered or just plain left alone.
Much like you, I attempted to install one awhile back with no instructions or good original examples and the result was disastrous. Since then, I have saved some photos and asked questions of owners with decent originals and feel I am about ready to give it another go. As you can see from the photos, there are a few definite creases along the length of the cover that are not present in the reproduction blanks.
Someone seriously needs to do a HOW TO on the subject and post photos on the correct process of a crisp install. ITS NOT EASY! ...at least not without good clear guidelines. The ticket to success here will be getting crisp folds in the correct places. I would not cut the cardboard or even score it with a blade, but rather impress a line with something hard and dull like a letter opener or similar. Bending or braking over a straight edge will be absolutely essential.
I can easily see a few more blanks going to waste before the perfect install happens and is documented for the potential benefit of all. Perhaps a smart supplier would want to sponsor such an effort and then corner the market on future sales.
