Hei --again

I finaly got the 283 out of my 65, building a new 283 with hei. Right now I have the yellow and the white resistor wire to + side of coil, purple to s on starter and yellow to r on starter- point dist to - side of coil. Question is do I remove the yellow, white and purple wires from the starter ? And where exactly on the fuse box do I run the wire from the hei dist. Any one have a pic with an arrow pointing to the right place on the fuse box, I'm to blind to read the lettering on fuse box. Any thing else I need to do for the converson? Thanks

Re: Hei --again

i put a bigblock in mine with hei, it was fairly simple, i got rid of the resistors and + to + and - to - on the hei, figure out which wire is your ignition wire to the starter, connect it, then take the other 2 wires and connect them together seperate from the starter. i hope that makes sence...

Re: Hei --again

You can hook it to the terminal that says Ignition or you can use the big pink wire coming from the ignition switch. I used the pink wire and it works just fine.

Re: Hei --again

Ok ,I suck at wiring, still not sure where the wire from battery on the hei goes to on the fuse block. I read to disconnect the white cloth wrapped resister wire from the starter, trace it back to the fuse block and hook up the wire from the hei in its place. Trouble is ,I cant find where the white resistor wire connects to the fuse box.

Re: Hei --again

Any wires there were hooked up to your coil will not be in use anymore. You only need one wire on the HEI. Just fold those wire over and tape them up. Make sure they are not touching eachother though. Then look under your dash where the switch is and look for the Pink wire. You can remove a small piece of the insulation without cutting the wire and solder the HEI wire to that or just look on the fuse block you will see a terminal that says IGNITION. That is where you plug into.

Re: Hei --again

I heard somewhere that the thin wire going to the coil isn't heavy enough for HEI, and if you look at a truck that came with HEI the wire is alot larger gauge. I didn't want to take a chance so I ran a relay off the batt, using the old coil wire to turn the relay on and off. Easy and now I DEFINETLY have a good 12 volt supply to my dist lol

Re: Hei --again

12 gauge + to the HEI or you risk poor performance and biting up modules.

Re: Hei --again

There are two wires on the switch, they both look red to me. I' m guessing the larger of the two is the pink one I'm supposed to use, am I right.

Re: Hei --again

I always run a new 12ga wire from the firewall plug to the dizzy. Use a new pin from the parts store. NAPA definitely has them. Push the old one out by squeezing the retainer flag on the side of the pin with needle nose pliers. I always replace the wire with the yellowish braided/woven insulation on the engine compartment side. The cab side is already 12ga.

Re: Hei --again

Does the pink wire change color before the plug at the engine compartment ?Thought I knew where to plug into, now not sure, no pink wire comming into the engine compartment. Sorry for all the questions, like I said I suck at wireing . I know this should be simple .

Re: Hei --again

I don't have the wiring diagram in front of me right now. Do you have one with withish yellow cloth-like insulation on the engine side? If so, replace that one with your new 12ga to the + on the HEI.

Re: Hei --again

Life got in the way, havent had time to mess with it. reading 12.51 volts at battery, traced the white cloth resistor wire back to the firewall plug and only read 10.45 volts at the plug in the run position. Engine not in truck yet, just hooked up the battery to get a reading. Shouldn't I be getting 12 volts from the plug in the run position ? Thanks.
