4x4 conversion

I know its alot of trouble but... I have a 69 shortbed c10 2 wheel drive that I want to convert to 4x4. I know it would be easier to just find one and buy it, but it was purchased in 72 by my grandpa, then passed down to my mom when she graduated and it was my first truck. The truck is not all original but i have centimental value in it. I prefer a 4x4 to a 2wd even if its only a not a mud truck. What all would i need to do this? and could i use a late 70's or 80's 4x4 frame with the cab and bed??

Re: 4x4 conversion

there is a four wheel drive forum you should use for this. I made the same mistake posting my question here. I have an 86 half ton four wheel drive that I want to put under my 68. it can be done, just a question of what steps need to be taken to make it work. I have no clue at this point. others will know every step required. good luck.

The easiest way would be to purchase a 4x4 chassis and swap your cab and bed over to it. They pop up all the time on craigslist. Try to get one with most of the stuff still there. Transmission, transfercase, adapter, both axels, etc.

My understanding is the 73-87 wheel base is different so it won't look right under your cab and bed. Ideally you want a 71 or 72 because they all came with power disk brakes.

Yes, I agree getting a 4x4 chassis is the best route. But finding a 4x4 SWB frame is next to impossible, I would suggest looking for a 71-71 LWB 4x4 frame and shortening it. These frames are around and will be much more reasonable than a SWB.
