I've been working on finishing up a 64 C10 for a while and am getting to the gas tank. The tank, from the PO, looks like it could have been new but I dont really know. Pics attached.
My question is about guessing about the inside condition. When I look down the cap, I see white residue that is powdery.
Do you think a clear fuel filter will catch this once I start filling it up,
do I need to pull it and clean it some how,
or do you think I need to rip and replace?

I got it cranked today and she sounds so sweet....but I am just using a fuel line, re-routed from the fuel pump, stuck down the neck of a plastic gas can.

Corrosion, probably from atmospeheric influences on the galavanizing process on the tank. I had to replace the locking gas cap on my new purchase for the same reason. If you are penny pinchin, shove a rag down into the neck and wipe off the excess build up. Do a final wipedown with a bakin soda and water mixture. Suck out the loose stuff with a vacuum before you pull the rag out. I had to remove my tank and have it cleaned because it was parked for so long. Pull out your sending unit and examine it. That'll tell you what condition the tank is it and how far you should go.

OMG! I took the sending unit out and it was nearly rusted off. I took the tank off and decided to just take it to a radiator shop where they will dip, clean, and line it for me. Man oh man did the gas stink!

Yep, sounds just like mine. Had ten gallons of stinky useless gas in it. Replaced the sender which sounds like it was just like yours. I got the same tank service. BTW, my tank resto cost $125.00. Bought a OEM lookin gas cap from NAPA for $6 and a new neck gasket.
