Your Thoughts a 383 Stroker

Ok I posted this thread in the Engine/Drivetrain part of the forum too, but I wanted to know what you guys thought too, are these good motors for our truck, what are you thought and comments about a 383 Stroker.....pros and cons.....also what do you think about this 383 Stroker I found of Craigslist.....http://stlouis.craigslist.org/pts/2404781946.html

I think a 383 is a great engine for our trucks, I have one half built for mine. I would be a little cautious about getting one that you don't know much about. The seller doesn't know the actual milage. If you can hear it run and see what kind of oil pressure it has it might be alright.

i can say nothing wrong about them i have one in my nova (not built out the butt) but i love the extra torque that it provides, has great pickup, spins the tires easy, with using the same gas mileage of 350

Having built about 5 or 6 of them, I can say I'm a big fan of them. I've had them in street trim and race trim. I have one in my '69 C-30 ramp truck and it replaced the 396. The 383 has more power, low end torque, and gets better fuel mileage thaan the 396 did.

As far as what to pay for one, that's a hard question to answer not knowing how it was built and by whom it was built. They work best with good flowing 64cc heads and dished pistons for pump gas, but I did build one with 76cc heads and flattops and it did real good, too.

They are good engines, but don't bore it out too far because of the steam holes between the center cyl's, no water flows between them , i would probably stick with the 383, mines a bear and the compression is only 9.8 to 1, strongest engine i've ever bulit, plus 400's are getting hard to find. you can also destroke a 400 to get a 383, but it's cheaper if you do a 350 stroked

Bought a 383 crate motor years ago......love it!!!!

Fun to drive on the street. loads of bottom end torque.
