New truck!!

I mostly just read in this forum, but that all changed yesterday.

I have been looking at Z71's for a few weeks and had driven one and was thinking of making an offer. It was a '94 with 260k, supposedly had a new engine and trans around 210k. It ran great, but didnt drive very well. It needed new shocks and the steering had alot of play in it before the truck actually turned. There were also some cut wires under the hood, the crusie didnt work and the pass side interior door handle was broken and wouldnt open the door. It was at a local dealership and they wanted $5800.

I picked this up yesterday for $5000.....

Its a '98, 227k. I has had in the past year: New radiator, a/c compressor and lines, shocks, starter, plug wires and one head gasket replaced. Its nice and clean inside and out. It was his daily driver and he says he never took it off road.

I think I did pretty good, only issue I can find is something is banging around in the front end and I cant locate it. Any ideas or something common that happens with these? Torsion bar bushing maybe????

I almost didnt get it because 2 other people showed up to buy it. They were willing to pay more but I had $$$ in my hand. They didnt.....

Re: New truck!!

Could be the ball joints making some noise. Shocks might need replacing if leaking or stock. Other than that, looks like a nice clean truck.

Re: New truck!!

Has brand new shocks, not even 6 months old I was told. The are monroe sensatracs.

I was thinking maybe a ball joint too. Are they any harder to change on a 4wd than a 2wd? This is only my 2nd 4wd vehicle and I didnt do much to the first one but drive it.

The noise is fairly loud and sounds like something loose rattling around, but I cant find anything that isnt tight????

Re: New truck!!

I found the noise(s) today. The upper bolt on the left side front shock was loose and letting it rattle around.

It also has a set of helper leaf springs and a bracket for them was loose as well.

So those are fixed, but I noticed the oil cooler lines leaking and the wipers quit today as well. overall I'm still really pleased with the truck....

Re: New truck!!

Yea I was actually going to say I had the same problem and it was just a simple shock bolt that was pretty loose causing it to bang around to all hell! Nice looking truck doesn't look to bad at all. Those oil cooler lines have little rubber o rings in the end might try replacing those first and go from there.

Re: New truck!!

Truck looks nice and clean! Your wiper issue could very well be the circut board within the wiper motor housing, very common problem on the GMT400's!

Re: New truck!!

Ya it still has a little clank, the pass side is loose as well. I guess I should have checked it while I was working on it yesterday, but the dr side was so loud I thought I got it.

Wipers work today, so who knows. I had read about the wiper control boards being a common problem so I figured that was it. Does it control the washer function as well? It has only worked one time.

Thanks for all the suggestions, help and comments guys!!!

It is really clean. It is one of the niceset ones I looked at. Most of them were beat to crap, or you could see the mud residue all over the bottom and in the engine compartment. This one has a little in the wheelwells, but you can get that running through a puddle.

I need to grab a few pics of the inside. Except for a smal place on the edge of the seat and the dr arm rest the inside is pretty much new

The only thing worrying me is that he never had any work done on the transmission. He was the 2nd owner (I think) and didnt know if the first one had anything done to it or not. He bought it just shy of 150k miles. Its not that it is doing anything to make me worry, its just not normal for them to go that long without a rebuild, around here anyways.
