How to finish small hardware - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hello, all. I'm newly registered to this board although I have been stalking it for years as a guest. I love it and all the helpful people out there. My question today is something that has plagued me with all my projects. What is the best way to keep nuts and bolt heads from looking like crap shortly? In the past I have painted the heads and been careful with them but I inevitably end up knocking the paint off the heads and they rust, look like heck, etc.

ummmm...wondering if powder coating would be too much?...or how about using just stainless?

I have wondered about stainless also but when you are talking about all the bolts on truck it gets quite pricey. And how about the threads on bolts that are exposed (like the ones that mount the control arms to the crossmember for example), after I thread the nuts on and tighten them I have bare metal that looks like s*** after only several months in this south Texas humidity (even when the truck is inside the shop always). This is probably a dumb question but can you get lots of little parts powdercoated? I have never got anything powdercoated so I would not know.

Not sure how much you are willing to spend but ARP makes quality hardware in a variety of finishes, brushed, polished, black etc.

Every bolt in the engine is ARP already so why the heck not? Haha, that's a good idea Southcity! Any other ideas from anyone before I spring for that? Thanks for the input

Zinc plate them. Places like Eastwood sell inexpensive kits for doing just that.

Somebody on here rolled theirs with walnut shells in a brass tumbler, then did the black oxide coat treatment. I believe that would be the stock treatment our bolts had. They did it at home so I know he bought the stuff from somewhere.

I was looking at getting this kit when I get to the bolt and nut stage right now im at the stainless screws stage..

Try Caswell Plating for kits. more product ranges for plating.

Hey El Campo you ever go to Tough Countrys Parties there???. If not you are missing a good time. they sometimes bring in the Huey for rides.

I know the place well. My brother won a brush guard from them a while back at Greek Brothers. I am more into the street trucks though. But I know done of the guys who work down there. Thanks for all the advice, so many options that I just have to figure out which to do!

Whatever you decide in the end, don't forget to update us with some pics of your engine once you complete your project.
