Tires???

As some of you know i am building a 61 Apache that will be 100% stock and original. I will soon be getting my original wheels painted the correct color. I have a couple questions.

1. What was the original size tire and whitewall width? The first pic of my Grandads truck (see thread) shows the tires when it was new. This is what i am after to duplicate.

2. Is there an alternate place other than Coker to buy these period correct tires? I'm not knocking Coker but i just cannot afford 700.00 for a set of these. The 17" tires on my 08 didn't cost that much, LOL.

3. If any of you guys spot these hubcaps for sale please give me a shout. I am looking for a good set chrome or painted.

Hey Zac, did you give Old Car Parts a call? I will go there and set them aside and tell them that you want them. I know they have them. I need to know what diameter they should be though.

And as far as I can find, the 7.10x15's were a factory size.

Not yet but i will for sure. I cannot determine if my truck originally had the 6.70-15's or the 7.10-15's. I think the WW's were something like 2" or so. I will call them today and see what they say. I will get back to you, thanks

They just told me to try Coker. Coker is fine but i was hoping to find them cheaper if possible.

According to the 1960 Chevy Truck Shop Manual, four tire sizes were available for ½ ton trucks:

6.70-15 4 ply
6.70-15 6 ply
6.50-16 6 ply
7-17.5 6 ply

Although these specs may have changed for the 1961 model year, I think it's likely the original truck came with 6.70-15 tires.

Bought a set of tires for my 64 C-10 recently from DB tires in Conway SC. Great workmanship...and the tires run smooth as silk. Love em... I had the pleasure of talking with and dealing with Bill Chapman (Founder and owner of the Company). This is a family owned and run business. They do care about their customers.

Here is an outfit that sells 6.70-15 and 7.10-15 whitewall tires, in at least 3 different OEM brand molds. I don’t know if the prices are any better than Coker, but they appear to be cheaper than Year One. Perhaps all the vintage tire suppliers just buy from Coker and remarket them.

I have no idea what brand tires originally came on our trucks, but I remember my mothers 1964 Buick Skylark came with US Royal tires. They were really crappy two ply tires that wore out in a couple of months. My dad knew the owner of a late model wrecking yard, so I used to pay $5.00 for the brand new 15” spare tires out of Buicks for my 54 Chevy. They were all US Royal tires, and were also poor quality. US Royal also made good tires, but new cars were usually delivered with the cheapest tires on the market. It wasn’t until the performance period came along later in the decade the manufacturers realized they could make more profit by installing upgrade tires.

None of the original quality issues really apply to new tires anyway since they are all built to current standards, using the original molds for cosmetics.
