Yes, everything in the 12 bolt truck rear ends will interchange. The exception is the axles, as there are 2 different widths of the housings. You just have to use the axles that are the correct length for the housing. If you are converting to the 5x5 wheel stud pattern, the aftermarket conversion axles are hard to beat.

Sorry if I jack you thread, but...

Capt'n,

Is it ok to use used gears as long as they look good? with new bearings.

Re: ? on 64 rearend

Most guys will tell you no. However, I have installed used gears a number of times with good results. If you take your time and set them up right, they should be good for quite a while. I put a set of used 3.42 gears in my '66 Suburban, and have put probably 100K on it since.

Re: ? on 64 rearend

so i can cut my pinon shaft out of my rear diff and go to a junk yard find a good set of gears and slap them in as long as i make sure i set them up right? i wonder if that would be cheaper than buying a whole new axle.

Re: ? on 64 rearend

Sooooo why do you need to 'cut' your pinion shaft? That doesn't sound good. If you have a serious problem with your rear end, you might be better off finding another rear end that either is a bolt in, or one that can be made to bolt in.

As for swapping gears, the key words are 'set them up right' If you have never worked on a rear end much, you will be in for a challenge. And you will also need the tools for the set up work. And if they are not set up just right, the results can be catastrofic.

Re: ? on 64 rearend

Sorry to jack the thread. But my truck the pinion shaft will not come out no matter what I do so I can't get my axles out to replace a leaky seal
