Wiring for fuel tanks

I have searched here and on the net, and was able to find a diagram so have a partial answer to my question, but still ????

76 K10 Silverado with factory dual tanks. I am working on rewiring and reinstalling. Never mind how it was patched up by previous owner. But how is it supose to be.

Sending units and SOV are no problem, thats 3 of the 4 factory wires. From what I have seen the 4th wire is for the gauge, But why is/was it routed down the driveside frame with the rest of the wires then past the SOV and up the passengerside frame only to connect to a constant hot. If it is for the gauge why does it even come out of the fire wall, where is it supose to go from there. The factory wire is probably 8 foot long so it seems like it should go back near the tanks with the rest of the wires, but why?

Hope that made sense and you guys can help out.
