how to remount the back-up switch on a tilt (van)column??
tried to ask this question b-4....w/ individual who sold it to me....but he ain't got time i guess. problem: the back-up switch that is located on the column needs to be mounted lower on the column....but the slot that the plastic "prong" of the switch rests in a groove in the inner portion of the column itself.i can do some dremel work and make a slot in the column's outer shell..but what is the solution to the groove that needs to be in the inner column's rod length?would like to retain the use of my back-up lights if at all possible............on another note, if anybody out there offers help w/ tech. questions and won't respond to an e-mail or a p.m. JUST DON'T MAKE THE OFFER TO HELP! 'nuff said.

I also asked and was hoping a member that had done this could help me out. I can maybe see how you could run without backup but that is also the neutral saftey switch which I think is kind of important. If there is someone who has done this I would really appreciate a reply also. With maybe some details on the process.
The part I am wondering about is the inner tube slot. It is circled in red in picture. The problem is it is only a little longer than neutral saftey switch slot. It does not run full lenght of tube. How are you cutting this out lower down on column.sorry about bright picture. Thanks

OK I'M BACK FOR A FEW MINUTES (TOOK A LUNCH BREAK) I'VE BEEN DOING THE BODYWORK, & GETTING READY TO PAINT A 72 JAG. FOR THE BODYSHOP DOWN THE ROAD. (WHAT A PAIN) OK STEERING COLLUMB....... I DON'T REMEMBER EVER DOING ANY WELDING ON ANY OF THEM, BUT THEN AGAIN, I USUALLY BY-PASS THE SWITCH ALTOGETHER. I'VE DONE ALOT OF THESE FOR ME & OTHER PEOPLE, & ONE I MENTION THAT I GET AN EXTRA $100 FOR RELOCATING THE NUETRAL SAFTY SWITCH, MOST PEOPLE OPT TO BYPASS IT ALSO.
THE STOCK LOCATION ON A VAN COLLUMB IS 11" BELOW THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE SHIFTER COLLAR. THE NEW LOCATION IS 18" FOR IT TO FIT IN A PICKUP. THERE ARE THREE SEPERATE TUBES OR SHAFTS IN THE COLLUMB. THE CENTER SHAFT IS SOLID & WONT BE TOUCHED, THIS IS THE STEERING SHAFT THAT GOES FROM YOUR STEERING GEARBOX TO YOUR STEERING WHEEL. THE OUTER HOUSING ON THE COLLUMB NEEDS TO BE CUT FOR THE SWITCH ITSELF TO MOUNT TO. THIS IS EASY ENOUGH WITH A DRILL & A DIE GRINDER, OR CUTOFF WHEEL. JUST DUPLICATE THE MOUNTING HOLE 7" OR SO FARTHER DOWN THE SHAFT. THE HOLE ON THE INNER TUBE....... NOW THIS IS THE TUBE THAT CONNECTS TO YOUR SHIFTER. (TURN THE STEERING SHAFT) (SEE NO EFFECT) NOW MOVE THE SHIFTER LEVER (PRETEND YOUR SHIFTING GEARS) SEE HOW MOVING THIS SHAFT WITH THE SLOT IN IT, WILL EFFECT THE NUETRAL SAFTY SWITCH???? YOU NEED TO DUPLICATE THIS SLOT IN ITS LOCATION. A DRILL & A DIE GRINDER WILL DO THE JOB. HERES A COUPLE OF PIC.S I HOPE WILL CLEAR UP YOUR QUESTIONS. WELL ...... BACK TO WORK ON THE JAG. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS....... POST EM......OR EMAIL ME & I'LL GET BACK TO YOU THIS EVENING. I'M NOT IGNORING YOU........ JUST VERY VERY BUSY. & NO MORE SNIDE OR RUDE COMMENTS.

Back up SWITCH RELO
What I did was take the back up switch from a 70's VAN and put in on my truck(Junk yard find). It's on the side of the tranny where the shifter is.
make sure you get the shifter linkage as well. A few adjustment and I had back up lites again....

Well, I've done this twice. Used the dremmel to cut out the column then welded a little L-bracket to the inner tube. Drilled the two screw holes that hold the switch on. Works mint. Also, I lowered the column, farther away from driver. I would suggest you loosley mount the column then crawl under the dash and mark where you want the switch, pull it out and go to town. Whole operation took an couple of hours.
