3/4 & 1-ton brakes

Investigating brake info & was curious: What dictated the vacuum or Hydra-boost brake options? Was it strictly buyers choice? Vehicle weight? Did many 1-tons come w/vacuum brakes?

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

I think all 1 tons came with hydraboost as well as anything with the 6.2 Diesel. Everything else got vacuum.

When I was looking for a master cylinder & calipers several months ago (online) there was a vacuum option which is why I figured I would ask the question here.

Re: 3/4 & 1-ton brakes

I think the vacuum option listed under most parts store catalogs for 1 tons is an error. Hydraboost was standard on 1 tons SRW or DRW. I have never seen one (stock) with out it. Now if you could have special ordered one with vacuum brakes, IDK. Might be a question for Keith. Besides 1 tons I think it may have just been the 6.2s like Your41Plague12 said, and heavy duty 3/4 tons. I had a 84 C20 RCLB 454/SM465 FF14B and hydraboost. Now that I think about it, its possible that not all 6.2s got hydraboost. I know some had a vacuum pump to operate the Turbo400 if equipped. I'm sure that pump could have provided vacuum for the booster as well, again not 100% on that.

In your experienced opinion, are they adequate?

Re: 3/4 & 1-ton brakes

I dont know yet, havent had the chance to get it put together. But I had a 1979 K30 with vacuum brakes and it did just fine....but with that being said, I plan on swapping over to hydroboost on this one. Mainly cause I dont want alot of vacuum lines running all over the place or leaking. When I am done I should only have 1 vac line, the distributor.

Weird.... the HB system under the hood of my dually leaks @ the ends of more than 1 line, near the accumulator, & @ the steering pump. Multiple dirty lines criss-crossing from the lower front corner of the motor to the master cylinder is not very attractive to me either.

The combined mess & visual impact of the multiple lines has me considering the simple vacuum boost as an alternative. I know nice, high-end/detailed HB systems are available, but @ a hefty cost vs. the KISS vacuum set-up.

Re: 3/4 & 1-ton brakes

I am not going for asthetics, just dont like vacuum lines running everywhere. I am changing out the TH400 for a 4spd,so no vac there, I have always liked the hydroboost for it clamping power over the vac brakes. Also "I" think that a firewall looks cleaner(dont know why????) without the vac booster. But then again I havent had a leaky hydroboost either!
