Sounds like one of those too good to be true (or worth it) kinda things.

I wouldn't give $50 bucks for a set IMO.
The iron in them is junk and they are cast with very thin walls to boot.
I see them go for real cheap all the time.
If you really want a set I would suggest a new set from Jegs or Summit.
Rarely can you rebuild a old set 'cause they crack so easy so it is usually cheaper just to get them new.
They are known at Chevrolet as "disposable" heads and for good reason.

I always thought about the smog heads not vortecs.

Seriously though, vortecs are as thin as any other smog head. Ive smashed 11 of my valves in stock vortecs againts the pistons, with no cracks. They are not bad heads. If they stink so bad, give em too me!

Low87,
If you are talking to me....
I read every book that comes out on small block Chevys.
I have thirty or so now and have read them all several times(ie: I need a life. LOL)
I also keep track of the price of things like this through several sources and I have noticed the Vortec heads really fall in price since they came out.
There is a reason for this. Same thing with "powered rods" or post 1987 forged Chevy rods, you can't give them away.
I know several people in the head rebuilding trade that say the same thing about the Vortecs.
One way to tell the quality of a head is weigh it. The more metal= the longer lasting.
Vortecs are REAL light.
I tend to get over 300,000 miles out of a small block and there is a reason for this. Not just one engine either but four so far.
I am not going to tell you which head to buy because there are so many good ones out there and the Vortec ain't one of 'em (IMO).

Mike, have you ever run a set of Vortecs before? if so, did they crack? it doesnt matter what your machince shop buddy says at this point. just becaue someone brings him a set of cracked Vortecs doesnt automaticlly mean they're all junk. with no idea of the history of the particular engine they came off of, it may have been overheated repeatedly, which would crack even the
"heaviest" heads. personally, i have a set of Vortecs that i bought used. i know they have been abused, they came out of a firetruck, and they are never run easy. they have been checked for cracks, and warpage. both came back perfect. after 80,000 hard miles if they're not cracked or warped, they probably wont for some time to come.

1Fast C10,
You have had good luck with them........
Glad to see it indeed.

My experience falls mostly with full-tilt racing engines.
The cost-is-no-object type. IE: Nascar and Porsche V8s

I build my engines (myself) to turn 6000rpm ALL DAY.

That said.
I have had two sets of Chevy's lightweight castings (one Vortec=one "smog" crap) fail due to cracks between the valves.

The heads could not take it.
The "heavy" ones can.

I know everyone out there cannot afford the ARAO Engineering 32 v heads or the like and some of you (?) want to get the most miles you can out of a engine before you open the old wallet.

Hence the post.
