rear shock relocation
I am going to purchase one of the rear shock relocation kits that CPP and others carry but I have a question for anybody that has used them. Do the brackets replace the original brackets or work with the brackets? Right now I am tearing down and prepping the frame for paint and if I don't need the brackets I would just as soon remove them now.

They help with re-positioning the shock to a more vertical alignment (front to back) in lowered applications.

Re: rear shock relocation
As well as regain some of the travel length by moving the mounts slightly farther apart.

Re: rear shock relocation
Hey pdxhall, I did mine 100% DIY front and rear. Here's the link. I can make more of the front relocators if you are interested. The rear only requires new shocks; no new brackets (front upper studs and modded lower OE brackets). I reused the lighter/well-broken-in former front shocks in the rear and put new Monroes in the front.

Re: rear shock relocation
Frizzle, I like the look and location of the rear shocks. I think I might give it a try, it looks real simple. I just tore down the rear end from the trailing arms and shock mounts tonight so I think I'll mock some up. What bolt did you use for the top mount? It looks like a front upper mount from the pix, is that so? I've got the front suspension done (2.5" spindles and 1" drop springs so I don't need the front relocated. I've got 5" drop rear springs and new shorter shocks for the drop in the rear.

Re: rear shock relocation
Yes, I used the OE front upper mounts in the rear. Also used my old front (soft) front shocks in the rear. You can really feel the improved ride and handling. Very stable on the freeway. Further improvement plans are for jeep rear springs and a 1.25" front sway bar. Come drive it if you want.

Re: rear shock relocation
Thanks for the offer Farmer but I think I'm going to try Frizzle's approach. Thanks for the drive offer Frizzle but I don't know when I'll be able to make it over that way, lots of things going on right now. I finished school and I'm in job search mode right now. I'd like to make it over to the cruise in again but not sure when. By the way, is that paint job on your truck an "ole skool" special?

Re: rear shock relocation
Frizzle. No, not yet. I've been cleaning up the frame, got the trailing arms blasted, and removed a couple of crossmembers to fit my rear fuel tank but that's it. Been real busy with some other things. I did make it over to Beaches a couple of weeks ago. I saw your truck but you were nowhere to be found. I crawled under your truck and took a look at your shock setup, though and I'm convinced I'm going to try it. I just wonder if the top mount could be beefed up a little more. What are your thoughts on that?

Re: rear shock relocation
Ugh, too bad we didn't meet up!
That was my initial instinct on the upper mounts too, but I figured if it's good enough for the front (much heavier) it's gotta be good enough for the rear. My 69 Tahoe with BBC has the same upper mounts up front. |
