Water pump nipples
Does anyone know where to get stock water pump nipples for the top of my new water pump? The ones I took out are rusty and full of crud. One is straight and short (1.5") and the other is maybe 22.5 degree bend (3"). I would like to stay out of my plumbing junk box for this one. Also, what are you using as a thread sealer. I was thinking teflon thread sealing paste (pipe dope) or teflon tape. Thanks.

Re: Water pump nipples
Check your neighborhood auto parts store. Teflon tape works fine here, just keep the tape from extending into the water jacket so it doesn't get into the works.

Re: Water pump nipples
Most of your FLAPS (Friendly Local Auto Parts Stores) have them, unless you want stainless then as posted above JEGS, Summit, etc will have them for a little bit more.

Re: Water pump nipples
So far, no luck at local auto parts stores - just dumb looks - I get that a lot around here. I don't see them in the online catalogs for the auto parts stores (O'reilly, Autozone, etc.). GM part numbers might aid my search - anybody have them?

Re: Water pump nipples
McMaster-Carr probably has something you could use, if you know the thread size.

Re: Water pump nipples
They will not be exactly like that, but at AZ they are in the back in the black or grey slide out drawers with the starter bolts.

Re: Water pump nipples
Napa will have them in their brass (weatherhead brand) assortment.
Thread size should be 1/2" NPT (NATIONAL PIPE THREAD) Hose size is 3/4"

Re: Water pump nipples
Local NAPA store has nothing and can't seem to find anything in their catalogs. I will try a local only store tomorrow. I will be looking for the guy with gray or white hair behind the counter.

Re: Water pump nipples
I believe I got mine in the "HELP" section at AZ or Advance.
Hanging on pegboard out on the store floor. (the guys behind the counter looked at me like I had a weed in the center of my forehead. The girl did remember stocking them a couple days prior)

Re: Water pump nipples
The HELP section is the Dorman or Motormite aftermarket accessory line. Unfortunately, local auto parts stores here stock very litte in those lines, and what they do have is usually stuff like brake line fittings, door pulls, etc. PEP Boys has the most, but they never seem to have what I want. When I do find what I need by searching their online catalogs, I end up ordering off the net.
From the dealer parts counters to the auto parts stores, it seems that all of the sales people know about parts is how to look up data in a computer catalog - that much I can do. I think the only truly knowledgeable counter people are some of those at the hot rod shops, and their knowledge is limited to the aftermarket brands. Having worked in various logistics/parts departments in different industrial environments, I don't know how you can work in the business for any length of time without subconsciously memorizing a lot of facts and part numbers - you have to almost try to not be well versed in your product lines. |

Re: Water pump nipples
Thanks for the link. I see at least one straight nipple that will work. So far, I found a 20 degree bend fitting at Ecklers for a C1 series (early 1960s) Corvette that should work. Unfortunately, S&H makes these double in price, so I'll still look locally for a while.
