Rear Brake Pad Questions

Hey Guys,

I have an 04 Z71 , with an issue. About 20K miles ago I replaced the rear brake pads and rotors. The rotors were original and had the flaking problem some of you have mentioned in previous threads. The original pads and rotors went 60K , no problems.

Part number for the pads are...Wearever Gold MKD-792.

While washing my truck I noticed the pads are almost gone again! I have done brakes on other pickups from these years, and have noticed 2 sets of rear brake pads to every set of fronts. I cant believe 4 different trucks between 03-05 have the same issue.

Have checked everything with the brake system , all appears normal. Acts like the proportioning valve was never set correctly from the factory. This truck see's all highway miles.

Do you guys have any thoughts? Maybe I'm using the wrong set or style of rear pad. Before you ask I'm an OLD man , the only thing I HAMMER is my Nova.

these brake pads material just isnt like the old days ,i seen some pads worn out by 15k ,are the pads worn out in different thickness from top to bottom ,im thinking maybe a stuck piston in the calipers ,also make sure the calipers are lubed up ,i take dielectric grease on the caliper hardware that way the hardware doesnt freeze and ware out pads

Thanks for the reply, I noticed even wear on all 4 pads during removal. Everything appeared to be free and lubed correctly from my last overhaul..

Could be the front calipers need to be blead (if thats a word) if the front brakes have less pressure then they should the rears could be doing most of the work. Just a thought.

Rear calipers going bad is not un herd of with these trucks. Usually you'll notice too much drag and a very firm pedal though.

Just rechecked my rear calipers , while replacing my pads , pistons compressed back into the calipers with no sticking at all, I'll keep searching.

have you tried a set of pads from the gm dealer dealer and see how long they last?
i normally install Wearever Ceramic CNAD 785 on those never had anyone notice a problem. i mean i had one customer with 128k on the rear pads but the new ones only lasted 45k i think the dealer pads are made out of a harder stuff

This is common problem with these years of trucks. My '03 Z71 with a 6" lift kit and 35s has the same problem. Everyone I know that has this body style truck seems to have the problem. I have around 92K on my truck currently. Guess what I have the original front pads and rotors still rolling stong with half a pad to go! My rears are on their way out as of right now. This will be the 2nd time I've done the rears. My experince with my truck is not near to what I've heard from others. I have replaced many rear pads for people around me and it's the same thing every time. Backs are bad....fronts are great. From what the dealer tells me it's the proportioning valve. Who knows.?

I got tired of buying rotors and pads for the rear of my wifes 02 Tahoe and switched to EBC rotors and pads and after 20K they still look like the day I installed them. They do make a little noise for the first couple of hundred miles. I also have seen that backing plates rust out on these pretty often and the rust areas exspand to make contact with the rotors. It seems like the right rear wears down sooner than the left too. I checked the rotor temp on the last rear brake job i did and the right rear was way hotter than the left after a test drive, I replaced the caliper and both were within 5 degrees.
