1967 6 cylinder power steering conversion
I have a 1967 C10, 292ci 6 cylinder with manual steering and want to convert to power steering. There is a lot of ebayer's selling brackets and partial kits to do this but I have a few questions.
My truck has the 292 cubic inch motor with an air pump mounted on the drivers side above the alternator. The 6 cylinder trucks from the factory, where was the power steering pump mounted? Is there anybody out there with the setup that could send me some pictures of it? Does the set up require the power cylinder on the steering arm or do you just connect the lines from pump to steering gear? Thanks, Patrick |

I can't answer on the brackets.I can tell you that the 67 factory PS was ram assist type.The 67 frame also does not have an indention for the 68 up PS box.You will need to heat and dimple the frame to get it to fit and lay flat against the frame.Some claim that spacers can be used but others claim this puts the PS box off center and causes squirrelly steering feel.
The later PS boxes bolt up once the frame is relieved and work well from all I can determine.I'm gathering parts for the swap now(though mine is a 250). You may find more info in the "Truck FAQ's" forum.Use Krue's index to help you find the thread.

Try using the search function at the top of the page. You can search the web which is the default or click the button for your search to remain on the sight. Use keywords like 292 Power steering (or ps) brackets conversion and your year. You'll find a lot and then some.....its helped me do my HEI and get parts for this very same conversion (mines a 68). Good luck....now get searchin'!

Here are a couple pics of my 67 with a 292. I added hydroboost so the pump is a hair different on the outlet but nothing significant.
What pictures do you want?

One washer on each space was enough. If I did it again I would dimple the frame.

Thanks for all the replies/information. I thought it would be nice to try and keep it as original as possible but, power steering wins out over the air pump - easily!
Mine is a little different since it has the factory air pump. Maybe I can use the crank and water pump pulleys that are for the air pump? Any other differences with the 292ci? The dimpling looks to be a fairly small amount, I don't have a torch to heat and reform - any other methods? 71swb4x4, thanks for the pictures, I would like to see your mounting brackets, close ups if you can. Are you using a power cylinder? Attached are pictures of the air pump location. |

Pat, the dimpling is for the power steering box, so I am using the 1968 and up style power steering pump with power steering box. I am not using the ram-style power steering from 1967 and earlier.
This is on my C30, and I went with hydroboost brakes which power the brakes off the power steering system. I can get more pictures if you want them.

I put spacers on my gear box , and the power steering brackets on mine are the same as pictured above

I got mine from a 79 Nova...the brackets for the pump and alt.
Pulleys from the water pump Harmonic balancer and 3rd pulley (NAPA had one...but 90 bucks, I'll try this) And the timing gear cover....timing marks are on the passenger side (it "matches the balancer) but you could re-mark the balacer for timing marks if you want. And for the steering gear I pulled one from a 72 GMC....But you can pull one from as late as 81?...I think with pitman arm. |

68 IRON, those brackets will not work with the older 292 that was in these trucks. They interfere with the bypass hose.
Mxracer, I can post more pictures tomorrow. Storms passing through right now. It's nothing special at all, its a standard power steering box that was found on trucks from 1968 and up, probably up to 1987 and maybe even later. Unless you are referring to the whole hyrdoboost setup, if standard power steering is what you want the hardest part to find is the 292 power steering brackets. The rest is a dime a dozen.

Yep, you're right. Forgot he was dealing with a 292 also. The brackets he needs would a little tougher to find, huh? At any rate, make sure you have everything from the one engine you get your brackets and pulleys from. It will lessen headache factor.
