Cab removal question
Hey guys, I'm moving the cab of my '57 from one frame to another frame and wanted to get your some input on what would be the easiest way to do it?
I have limited resources, like an engine hoist and a few guys and thats it. I thought about using a couple of lifting straps and the engine hoist but not sure how stable that would be. Plus everything is still in and on the cab and I really don't want to take it apart (again).

I just used two big guys. Some guys put wooden beams through and lift off that. Just don't drop it on your toes.

Like Big Chevy Said Two guys can do it, I also did it this way. And it would be quicker than rigging up the hoist.

I lifted mine off complete & intact, took four of us but could have used one more, especially in the front, be aware very front heavy!

I did it with a hoist and some 2x4s I had no one to help it was pretty easy. I attached a pic of the jig I made it is copy of others that people made on the forums. It is not on the hoist.

I can tell you from personal experience that you can't use the 2x4/engine hoist method like Kim57 & jimig1 described if you're wanting to leave the doors on. Just as Red Foreman said, it will be VERY front heavy. I used ratchet straps and and engine hoist and it worked really well. See my 53/S10 build thread link in my signature below.

I don't want to take the doors off so the 2x4's and a couple of guys probably won't work, we're getting old and our backs would probably go out as soon as we took a step.
I like the wood mounted on the hoist idea. I'll look at that. 63 & 64 Bowties, Nice thread. I see how you did the cab removal, looks pretty simple. I think the ratchet straps might work, I'll look at that also. Thanks for all the good ideas.

The wood beam is the best way to go. Straps will stress and bend things like the gutters, and run the chance of breaking since they are highly stressed when the angle is low.

Well I tried it with the ratchet straps. I bolted the straps down to the body mount locations on the inside of the cab and put the hoist thru the window of the passenger door. Unfortunetly, a few things happened. First, my hoist isn't a real big one (lifts 1ton) so when I lifted the cab it pulled the hoist into the door and put a nice dent in the door (thats what I needed was something else to fix). Second thing, I tried lifting it with the door open. That was going ok till the step was pinned under the jack on the hoist, luckily I saw that before I made more work for myself. Finally, got the step problem under control and then one of my straps broke and dropped the cab back down. Thank god it didn't mess anything else up.
So it looks like I'm back where I started. I haven't tried any of the wood stuff as of yet and I don't have any trees around that I can attach a cumalong to. Any other ideas???

I know you don't want to hear this but I think the easiest thing to do is remove the doors.
I know it's a pain to do that but it will save you more work in the long run. These cabs are pretty light without them. JMHO. Kim |

If you are going to remove the doors, you may want to drill a 1/8" locating hole thru the door and thru the hinge in the door BEFORE you remove the doors.
If you do remove the hinges from the A piller do the same there. You will find as you get into your project that the upper hinge on at least the drivers side will need some attention.

Thanks for all the suggestions on how to move the cab.
I got it moved today, had to remove the doors just to get it light enough, but it's done. Used the ratchet straps, my engine hoist and my neighbor. Took 10 minutes to get it done. Now on to the engine mounts. Joy.

me and a buddy just picked up on both sides and man handled my 66 cab off. I dont really suggest it, hard on the back.

If you use a strap, watch out for your drip rails. They bend easier than you'd think. If you're using straps, I would also suggest using a couple of 2X4's through the cab to keep the straps away from the drips. Two big guys or four small ones is the best. If you use help, make sure the wife is away. That 24 pack beer break always gets her at odds.
