Tow Bar question

I've had no experience in these, how safe and would it be a bad idea to have a guy pull a 4x4 72 blazer for me from NW USA to Ks? Thanks Randy

Re: Tow Bar question

Randy, that is all i used to use back in the day. The question is, what is he pulling it with? A blazer is pretty heavy. That is along way to go with a tow bar... i would probably look at a dolly or trailer for that distance.

What he said^^^! That blazer is going to wig wag in the ruts, unless it's behind a bus or something.

Re: Tow Bar question

as long as the truck is up to the task, then there should be absolutly no problem at all, and no wig wagging either.
I've used tow bars WAY more than I've used trailers, never had an issue when i was doing it properly, and only had minor issues when I wasn't doing it right.

Re: Tow Bar question

I pulled a '67 K/10 Suburban -- with a burned out BBC and a full load of gear in the back -- behind a U-Haul F-350 from El Centro Cal to Tucson AZ with no problems. U-Haul didn't have a tow dolly big enough, or a flatbed trailer available, so they sold me a tow bar for $100. I got home OK.
A few years later, sight unseen, I bought a '72 K/5 rolling body [ frame, axles, tub and tires, no body parts] in Lake Havasu. Pulling it on a U-Haul flatbed behind my '71 Jimmy 4x4 back to Tucson was a real dog. And a lot more expensive.

how do the motorhomes do it, they don't pull the shafts every time they tow the car/truck behind it

Re: Tow Bar question

I pulled a 68 SWB BB loaded down with parts from Alubuquerque, NM to Pensacola, FL (1400 mi) with zero problems. I was using a 07 Chevy HD with a Duramax, so that might have helped a little......

most motorhome owners have quick disconnects on their driveshafts. The problem with leaving the driveshafts hooked up is they still spin the output shafts of the trans or transfer case, without the iput shaft spinning their is no lubrication to those output shaft bearings and you can easily burn them up. Does it always happen, no, but much better safe then sorry.

I've always pulled them but figured it was different with 4by4

Re: Tow Bar question

I've put 12000 miles on my Blazer towing behind a 24 ft airstreem motorhome. I did build the towbar myself and made sure it was heavy duty. I also built a surge brake into the towbar. Transmision in park T case in nuetral and no problems. Towed like a dream, and its the fastes the blazer has ever been. Had up to 95 miles an hour on the I 5 around LA. Because of the weight of these trucks, if you don't have it balanced well on a trailer it will tow like ass.
