Re: extended cab?
They were the crew cabs I don't know how man were made I know not a ton because you don't see them around that much well at least not up here. I think a big lifted 4x4 one would be pretty sweet though ya!

An extended cab was not a regular production option. There were some aftermarket customizers who made their own; there also was a "bonus cab" option which was essentially a crew cab (four forward swinging doors) with no back seat. K

Re: extended cab?
Ford and Dodge had extended cabs....... Then when GM decided to do it in the eighties; they were limited and cost $6000. over the basic truck cost. Typical GM. A day late and makes up for it, with charging the buyer twice as much.

Re: extended cab?
Just to clarify you mean the 88+ body style right? Since as previously mentioned GM did not make pre 87 extended cabs.

Re: extended cab?
Jon, I was talking about the 83-87 extended cab experiment that GM was doing with the square bodies. They did limited advertising, hired an outside company to do the conversion and charged the buyer $6000.00 over the cost of the truck the conversion was to be done on. I have an 85 CVI extended cab conversion, mine was shipped to Arkansas new and that's where I found it. Most were bought in Texas and Oklahoma, because not many people knew about them. In 1988 with the new body truck, they introduced them from the factory. GM could have sold thousands of them in 83-87 if they would have spent some money on tooling at the factory.

Re: extended cab?
I have always been under the impression that GM had nothing to do with the square body extended cabs. I would be interested in seeing some of the GM advertisements... see how they tried to sell the new extended cab trucks.

My understanding was that since the new body style (GMT400) was coming it made no sense to tool up a new cab style (and frame) for the remaining year or two. Also - I think the marketing groups felt they had it covered with the crew/bonus cab offerings (we see now, of course, they guessed wrong on that one). K

Re: extended cab?
Yeah as far as I know they were all conversions, not products of GM directly. I assume they were licenced by GM to do the conversions, but that no different than Regency, Mariah, Centurion, etc. Independent companies upfitting or modifying a new truck they belive will be marketable above the price they invest in them. I don't think they were sought out by GM to make the modification though.

Hey Keith-
Here's one nice and close to home. Comes complete with skirts. We don't get to see too many in our area. This is a current posting on Detroit Metro Craigslist. It's not one of mine. Current owner put it on a 4wd chassis. Project needs to be completed. http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/cto/2517034526.html |

Re: extended cab?
The only thing I have come up with in the last 4 years of research is that they were strictly after market conversions. The only link to GM is the dealerships. They would only retain the same factory warranty that the conversion vans would hold which I believe was primarily drivetrain. I know that CVI build the majority of the ones I have found, followed by Overland coach and Stagecoach conversions. There are a few with Western hauler badges but no one at Western hauler can confirm production. I havent found any hard documents. Ive had people claim to have some, but no one has produced any hard documents. Most of the info I have is from original owners and a few salesman who sold them. All 5 of mine were converted at CVI in Arlington Texas. The most noticable difference between CVI trucks and the others is that the CVI trucks have trim around the windows that looks factory. The others have puffy, padded trim around the windows.

Re: extended cab?
there was a company in Independence, MO. called Hemco, They made a fiberglas extension for the square bodys, They had 1 or 2 that were done up as their show trucks. (iirc they were a bit pricey add on.)
As far as seeing any on the road, I never did. Google still shows an address and phone for them but the building has been empty for several years. |

Re: extended cab?
There is an extended cab truck up here, I noticed it one day on my way to school. It is a very nice truck, I'd put money on it that the truck is not from Indiana. It looks like it is dropped a little. Very cool looking truck, I have only seen a couple in person.
