can i fix this exhaust manifold - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm not sure if it'll seal properly or not anymore so I'm wondering if I can resurface them or do I need to find a new manifold? Or is there a way to make sure they'll seal properly?

Looks like there is still gasket stuck on them to me.

That looks like part of the old gasket on there. Rap on it a little bit with a small hammer and see if it flakes off or take a small angle grinder to it. Just go easy. I think it will clean up.

I wonder how much it would cost or if it were possible to have a machine shop deck a set of these. I would go with an angle grinder with a 120 grit flapper on it and see if it will even out.

i agree looks like gasket on there still. On stock manifold i don't even use gaskets and they do fine.

I would take a grinder to them and clean up the surfaces, not so much grind metal off but clean the surface and get rid of the old gasket material. Then use a 50% Crush gasket that you can probably buy at any auto parts store and make sure you tighten the bolts to the Specified Torque Values for the manifold. They should still work ok. If you dont want to grind them then Sand Blast them and then paint them with a high temp paint if you want to make them look better. Good Luck.

send them to a machine shop and resurface them, clean the head real good and put them back on WITHOUT gaskets. been in the exhaust business over 26 years and thats the way we always do them. as long as you torque them properly they will never leak unless the head surface is damaged.

Get a stiff wire brush on a grinder and take the old gasket off and see how they look then!
I have never used the gaskets on mine.
