400+ hp with a saginaw 4 spd ?'sss
Hey I'm new to the site and I just found a really nice saginaw for $350. I'm in process of a frame up on a '68 C-10 and want to get rid of my old 307 with 3 spd manual. I plan on putting in a 383 stoker with about 400 hp. Is this tranny going to hold up to this kind of horsepower? Im not gonna race it or anything, just a toy I drive on wknds. It's not going to be a show truck, its my first rebuild. Any help on what trans all you guys use would be great!!

I have run Saginaws years ago and never had any trouble with the gear box. I had a very strong small block that ran mid 11's in the quarter mile, of corse that was in a camaro. Saginaw would not be my first choice but I dont think it will be your weakest link

Problem is partly the power AND the weight of the truck. The drivetrain always lets go at the weakest part. I wouldn't in these trucks.

Honestly, with that kind of power I'd be looking at something like at least an NV4500 or something stronger than a Saginaw. That's just me.

you eat that trans up with the clutch and pressure plate .i had a m21 blow up then i had it rebuilt for 500 hp rate it cost me 2200 bucks ,look for t5 trans

I'd try to find a NV4500 and be done with it personally. Heck a NV3500 may get the job done too.
