Re: New Project!! '63 SWB Fleet My Build Thread

here is a quick shot we took last night, dark out but I will get some more today after work. Anyone know anything about the Inline 6 for the 1963 year? I also need to drain the fuel tank, is there a way to drain the tank without removing it from the cab?

Re: New Project!! '63 SWB Fleet My Build Thread

great Patina! lucky!! As for the gas tank, on my '66 the fuel line comes out the bottom on the passenger side(steel) then goes to rubber fuel line. I just took that off and let it drain in a pan. ended up having to remove the tank to clean it all anyhow. Hope it works out!

Thanks, I like 'em rusty haha. Ya I figured there was no easy way to drain the tank. Anyone know where to pick up a good carb for an inline 6?

Re: New Project!! '63 SWB Fleet My Build Thread

ok so tank cleaned, oil changed, battery installed, NO START.... I have learned that this truck has the OG 230 inline 6 I was hoping it had the 292.... anyway, no fuel to the carb, old fuel in the pump, replacing the pump, coil, distributor, wires, and plugs this week, hopefully it starts after all that is done and I can move on to brakes and suspension....

Apparently you can rev a 194,230 & 250 higher than a 292. Some small block chevy parts will go right into the 6 if your looking to get more power out of it. I have a 250 in mine and I enjoy the power, along with the fuel economy. These things are basic mechanics. Get yourself a shop manual for insight into any problems that might creep up. Also there's great free advise here as well.

thats exactly what i was thinking. you should have this thing running in no time. i doubt something serious is wrong with the engine. ive also read you can use 350 pistons and other components for some extra ponies. check this dude out:

you pretty much got an easy maintenance-gas saver-potential dragster under your hood. good score.

Re: New Project!! '63 SWB Fleet My Build Thread

thanks for all the positive comments and suggestions, i am turning into a big fan of the inline 6 in all the different sizes, 230,250, and 292, I had a 327 in my '66 and that was a thirsty truck, i am interested in this 350 piston upgrade, but let me get what i have running first

Re: New Project!! '63 SWB Fleet My Build Thread

right, i will be sure to check that. i am going to replace the fuel line from the pump to the carb with neoprene line instead of steel and install an inline filter between the pump and carb, I am waiting for the fittings, NAPA did not have them in stock...I HAVE to get this truck started this weekend, too bad the heat index here is going to be like 115 all weekend not the best weather to be under the hood outside.

I got a rochester monojet 1-barrel that I saved from my old 250 L6. It worked when I pulled it off three months ago. PM me if you're interested.

Edit: I also have a DELCO HEI distributor that I pulled from that same motor with the cap, rotor and wires still attached. One hot wire to the IGN post and you are good to go.

Hey I may be interested in those items, PM sent.... Anyone have a good working fuel pump for a 230 they want to sell me for cheap?

I set the timing, finished up repairing the fuel lines and checking for clogs in the fuel lines and finally came to the conclusion that the fuel pump HAS to be bad, I disconnected the fuel line from the sending unit at the tank and I was able to blow through the line easily, which tells me the line isn't clogged. Another indicator was that when I took the old pump off, it was full of old gas still, so, if the pump was working it should at least pump that old gas out of the pump and up to the carburetor, RIGHT???

Re: New Project!! '63 SWB Fleet My Build Thread

If you have a factory fuel filter it will be on the passenger side frame rail under the door near the tank. My 1960 GMC has one, and the filter correct filter cartridge is Napa part number FIL 3271. I’m not sure if 1963 Chevy trucks came with this filter or not, but if it did this may save you some searching.

checked under the frame rails, no filter inline before the pump, i don't know if these are the original fuel lines or not, I expected to find a filter in line but no such luck, the good news is that the line seems like it is clear because I can blow through it all the way from the tank to the fuel pump....should I buy an inline filter to put in between the tank and the pump??? that would mean replacing the entire fuel line from the tank to the pump

My buddy bought a 64 with a 292 L6... I gave him all of the stuff i had lying around from my old 250. (A/C comp, PS pump, bracket, Sorry, dude. If he decides to NOT use them, it doesn't fit, or if I run into anything else, I'll keep you in mind.

If you're running a mechanical fuel pump, I'd just put a filter after the pump and before the carburetor. Mechanical pumps are very forgiving. Electric pumps are not, and need a filter before the pump.

OK, I did put an inline filter between the pump and carb, that should be good for now, new fuel lines are over $100 on lmc so I didn't really want to make that repair if i didn't have to!! Looking for a new fuel pump if anyone has one

That was on the '60-'62's only, and maybe just on the GMC's. I don't know if the '60-'62 Chevys had that canister filter or not.
