i USE THEM BUT i DON'T LIKE CLEANING THEM!
Much easier to throw the old one away and replace with a new paper one!!

K&N filters are controversial on whether they stop enough dirt, or whether they screw up mass airflow sensors. I run paper on most things, but have one K&N on one vehicle. The cleaning kit works very well. Spray it, let soak ten minutes, rinse, dry, and spray with more red stuff. It is really pretty easy to clean and is faster than driving to the parts store to get another paper one.

Is it worth the money? Maybe.

Easy to clean/take care of. You only have to buy it once. I've ran them on dirt bikes, street bikes, my Tacoma, 53gmc, 59 Chevy & my wife's BMW are all running them. I've heard the stories about the mass airflow sensors, however I've never had the problem. There's also reusable dry filters out there. I've always liked K&N and will continue to use there products.

It only affects the mass air sensor if over oiled, which I did once on a 4.3l blazer. I sprayed the wire out with brake clean and the problem went away. I DO think they let by more dirt (this has been proven time and again with used oil analysis) but over the life of a well maintained engine is a minimal concern. I do NOT believe it would cause catastophic engine failure. I run paper in my daily drivers now, but in a hot rod that gets driven only on the weekends it should be fine. AND sometimes the only real choice you have is a K&N - I built an odd air box that the paper version wouldn't work on, and some people have the cone filters just because they are super easy to run on EFI.

1000000 mile warranty is very worthwhile just take the cost of your paper filters and total it up by the amount of times you buy a new paper one vs the cost of buying one K&N for your ride over the lifetime you own it. If your concerned about too much dirt driving it down a dirt road they also sell a pre-filter for people who offroad. I use them for the wide variety of shapes and sizes along with the added gas mileage and power increase for my different vehicles. I love the oil filters too, having that 1" nut on the bottom makes removal much easier.

I have them on everything I own.

Secret to a K&N is, dont over oil them ( when you buy one look at it and remember how red it is), and dont over clean them. Most of mine get cleaned once a year, and I spend alot of time off road! Even if it looks dirty, it still passes WAY more air than a paper filter.
I did a test a few years back on my Cummins. I used a Magnahelic gauge, which measures pressure differential in inches of water. By the time I got the needle to move on the gauge, I could not see any of the screen on the filter due to dirt. Even then, it was still less than .5" of water pressure difference.
