Need help!

Hi guys, i got an 83 gmc sierra and there is something i need help with. Ok, i can put the key in and turn the ignition on(you know where the red seat belt light comes on) but when i try to turn the truck on, nothing happens. i mean nothing. The battery is new (the lights work, dome light, brake light, etc.) so i know its not the batt. I hooked a push button to the starter to see if i could crank it like that. Well the motor will turn over, but there is no spark going to the plugs. i have replaced the ignition switch, the distributer, battery, plug wires, but it just refuses to start. I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem, and if so i need some advice. I think it might be a wiring problem? i would appreciate any help you could give. thanks.

Re: Need help!

What kind of Distributer do you have? Is it the OE style or a new After Market Style. OTher way, make sure you have power going to the input on the distributer.

Re: Need help!

Check the ignition switch its what the tumbler turns and tells the starter to start, it could also be a security wire if those had much for security i know on the older chevy cars they had a security wire going to the ignition switch that would break, it sounds like a wiring issue cause it won't even try to turn over. like he said check power and ground at the distributor but even then it should turn over with the key it ust wouldn't have spark, figure out why it won't turn over with the key first and that might fix all your problems

Re: Need help!

i guess i should have read your post a little better....i figured the ignition switch would be the problem, did they have the PROM in the computers in 83 that could be it nothings getting the signal but it should still crank, yes it is suppose to have power to the distributor while cranking

Re: Need help!

sometimes they do leave them open so you can wire somthing in like a buisness band or something so it comes on with the key, that is one thing to try if you have a test light is to check every fuse no matter what it says just check them all check both sides with the key on see if any are burnt

Re: Need help!

ok, so the red is "ign" slots that are empty. the yellow is an "ign" slot that i have a fuse in, and the green is two "batt" slots that are empty. Is this how it is supposed to be?
