It's Time to let go?

Wrecked my daily driver about a year ago.Bought her brand new. Been trying to deceide which way to go. Ole gal is to far gone (costly) to repair. Lots of good original parts.Going to strip some parts to keep before taking to scrap yard.

Re: It's Time to let go?

Why, of all things, would you take that to the scrap yard?? Its obviously paid for. Hell, id let the thing sit and rot a timely death before I took it to the scrap yard. You know, they dont make those things anymore!! There are people around that would love to have that truck and the oppurtunity to rebuild it from its current state. If you just insist on getting rid of it, offer it for sale for the same amount the scrap yard is going to give you. Youll get your money (not much) and someone else will get a good truck at a great price.

For God's sake, dont send it to the crusher!

Re: It's Time to let go?

Looks like a replacement frame, front suspension and front clip would fix it up. If you are so attached that you held on for a year, it may be worth repairing for sentimental value.

Think about it, new truck is 25 grand for a base model. You can spend less than 1/5 of that cash to rebuild your truck. Thats the reason I drive my 86, costs me almost nothing.

don't sell it to a junk yard they wont pay crap for it. someone will rebuild it. sell it on craigslist and you could get more for it.

Re: It's Time to let go?

The hardest things to find are a good cab and a decent original tailgate. Doesn't look like the wreck hurt those. Do you have frame damage? If so, I would look for a good frame and have it painted or powder coated. Nothing like a restored rolling chassis to get the blood flowing.

You know your situation. I am sharing what I would do, not trying to tell you what to do. The trucks are common and parts can be had cheap if you look around. But you have to be willing to give up the space, time and emotional energy to take it on.

Thanks for all the input. That was my fist thought was to repair. The frame is tweeked really bad.I was hoping to come across another truck with a good frame. Maybe i'll drive her back in the corner and stew on it awhile longer. I'm almost finished my '56? Are you ever really finished?

Re: It's Time to let go?

Don't scrap it! They're just too nice of a truck to take in for junk. That's whats keeping me from scrapping my truck. It's got a few problems but there is a ton of potential in them.

My vote is fix it up and drive it again.

Re: It's Time to let go?

Damn bummer deal about the wreck I know how it goes been there done that. Yours looks super straight except the front end but its still fixable with some time and money. I vote keep it or sell it and let someone else make a cool ride out of it

Re: It's Time to let go?

Rust free frames are all over the southwest under trashed old square bodies. I would think you could get a whole used truck with a good front end clip for $800 or less. Add another $800 to ship it to you and you are done. Do I see a little rust in the left rear quarter panel? If so, and you have rust elsewhere, then I would just part it out. $2K -$3K gets you rust free trucks, some with excellent bodies and running engines/transmissions in the southwest - you have to look but they are there.

Keep it and fix it up! Nothing like an old truck with sentimental value. If you do part it out though, dibs on the tailgate . My truck needs to be a GMC again, like the title says it should be.
