LMC Fuel Tank Relocation Kit

Have any of you guys used the LMC Fuel Tank Relocation Kit? Im looking into it and it seems pretty complete. I just wanted to see what my fellow board members had to say about it.

Makes sense. It always bothered me that the tank was right behind my seat, I used to smoke and just had terrible visions of an exploding C10.

I can see where that thought would give someone the willies. However, consider that the fuel tanks were located behind the seat all the way up to 1972 and for as many vintage trucks I've seen wrecked over the years, I don't recall ever seeing one that died by fire and back in the day many more people smoked than do today.

$199 is not too bad. 21 gallons, includes sender and mounting straps. It is thirteen inches deep, which may hang down more than I want. I will need to measure.

$215, but it is only 15 gallons, 10 inches deep.

I would go with a rea tank from Boyd's welding, he has a GB about twice a year, they usually run around $350.00 but ar 19 gal and are very well built. also they come with the sending unit and bed fill or side fill.

I used the kit like the one from LMC got it from classic trucks, it is out of a blazer, here are some links to how we installed it and how far it hangs down.

1. We originally thought we would go with the filler neck as it comes (top left angle fill)

2. we also wanted it as high as possible so we modified the bed crossmember by installing a piece of flat bar after we removed the center of the crossmember so the bed bolts would not hit the top of the tank.

3. As we progressed thru the build we found that we wanted to bolt the tank to the bottom of the frame and make it easy to drop if we needed to remove it, so we welded nuts to the frame flange to make this easier.

5. As we installed the bed wood we realized that the side fill part of the tank was not going to have enough drop to facilitate filling the tank, so we decided on a different approach. We cut the fuel tank filler neck off and added a plug and brazed it so you could not tell it had been there, and cut a new filler neck hole that was a straight drop through the bed wood.

7. Mystery---how far does the tank hang down ? well I have not gotten the rear bumper on yet to figure that out, plus I run rear air bags so I can adjust the ride height.
the tank hangs down 7" from the bottom of the frame (about halfway covers the 12 bolt rearend center cover........Kieth

Glory Be, we got the correct bumper bracketss, put them on so now I can post a picture of the bumper to fuel tank relationship. I adjusted the air ride so the truck is riding level and this is how much tank shows from the rear of the truck. As soon as we put it on the rack I will post pictures of the exhaust system.........

By the by, does the Liscense plate bracket mount to the outside of the body at the top of the bracket. No instructions exist and I no longer trust LMCs' pictures. i.e. the bumper brackets do not mount like LMC show in their catalogue, the outer brackets go in the frame holes toward the rear of the truck not the ones shown (toward the front of the truck)

Thanks for posting those links. I think that is the route I am going. As far as not filling from the side, where were you originally going to put the filler?

I have that kit in my truck. It is not hooked up but it is in there.
Like said above I modified one of the cross members and the tank hangs down about 7".
There are two crappy pictures on my photobucket site on Page 7 if you want to look. I know there are others of it in but will have to look for them.

I was thinking about using the stock tank mounted in a tool box in the bed, has anyone tried that before? Right Now its just a thought since I havent taken any measurements yet.

I was going to fill it from the bed floor but there was just not enough drop, so we went the direct method. It is working very well. Kieth
