Re: new problem,speedocable HELP PLZZZZ

I know on motorcycles that you can buy an cable-to-electronic convertor. I think you should be able to find the same for what you need. I have done a ton of these conversions on old bike restorations in the past. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Re: new problem,speedocable HELP PLZZZZ

I use the Abbott Cable X. It uses the electrical signal from the transmission and converts it to a motor speed that runs the mechanical speedometer.

Works well. You can also calibrate it to give the correct speed on the speedometer.

Q.8 My biggest supplier for these convertors is Dakota Digital. They are a large Digital Gauge company and I have had really good success with their product. I am actually building a chopper for a customer and am in the middle of wiring it up today. Good luck... I will check my catalogs when I get to the shop in the morning and let you know.

As far as I can tell Dakota Digital has nothing like what you need. If I understand correctly you want to convert an electronic speed sensor on the transmission to run a cable operated mechanical speedometer.

If that is correct then I know of only two solutions. 1. A motor drive like the Cable-X to convert the electronic signal to motor speed to drive the cable. 2. Convert the transmission tail-shaft to a mechanical speedometer gear drive. Either solution is +$300. Check out this thread.

If you want cheap, throw in an electronic speedometer.

Did I offend you just by saying it's not a cheap fix. I'm just stating a fact. Don't get upset with Q.8 just because he acknowledges my post.

Re: new problem,speedocable HELP PLZZZZ

If you have a cheaper alternative I'm all for it. I studied this problem for a long time before I concluded that the CableX is the cheapest solution that actually works. Then I studied some more before I broke down and bought it. I was determined to keep all the stock gages working with my LS swap.

This is not a plug and play. It takes some work to mount the box, get the correct length cable, do all the wiring, do the calibration etc. But once that was done I haven't had any trouble with it (about 7000 miles). I can't hear it running either and it is just down below the fuse block.

Here is a picture of it mounted in my truck. You can see the speedo cable coming out of the lower right side. People mount the box in various places, fire wall, inner fender, behind the seat, under the dash etc. The key thing is to put it where the cable can reach the speedometer with the least number of bends, and the bends must be very gentle (big radius bends). I thought being electronics and not sealed it would be better to have it in the truck with me.

It comes with a cable but of course was not the length I needed. I had to get the CableX people to make me a cable to my specific length requirements. They did that quickly.

The cleanest solution is to change the transmission tail-shaft to a mechanical speedo drive but it is typically more expensive and you then don't have the electronic signal for other uses.

Good luck with your build however you decide to do it.
