Question about some wires under my hood.
So I was cleaning up the driver side of my engine compartment and noticed a bunch of crap mounted to the radiator support.
My questions are as follows: 1) I am tossing the generator for an alternator. I noticed 2 regulators, one old (original I am guessing) and a newish one that was plugged in. Following the alternator write up, I connected 2 wires together and terminated one. That gets rid of the regulator. But there is a small box (a fuse?) that has a red wire run in and out, but also has a black with white stripe wire on it. Nowhere in the wire diagram do I see the little box (about 1.5" x .5" rectangle looks to be ceramic) nor do I see the black/white wire. What is the little box and what is the black/white wire for? Do I need either one? 2) Is anyone running an electric fan in place of the stock fan? My motor is a mostly stock 327. Trying to clean up that area and thought it was a good idea, but I don't see anyone else running them except the LS guys. If you are running an electric fan, can you give me the specs and post up pictures? Thanks.

Re: Question about some wires under my hood.
Can you post a picture of the small box? Sounds like it could be an inline fuse, or a Maxifuse someone has added, or perhaps a horn relay.
I'm running a Flexalite Black Magic fan on my 1960. It's actually too small for the size of the radiator (doesn't cover enough surface) and a dual fan would provide better cooling, but I live in a cool climate and don't drive the truck in extremely hot weather so it's kept my 350 from overheating since 1996. I'll take and post pictures a little later. |

Re: Question about some wires under my hood.
I'm not sure I can find it. I tossed it on my bench and can't seem to locate it. The wires going to it are factory wires, the large red wire that goes to the generator and the black with white wire that is in the lower half of the drivers side firewall harness.
I can't be the only person with this wire. I plan to rewire the truck when I swap bodies, but I want to get my truck on the road before then. I am just trying to figure out if it isn't needed with the alternator. There is no mention of it in the HEI swap located in the FAQ. <edit> What size is the fan? Looks like a 16" fan would cover what the stock one does. I'll look for a dual, too.

Re: Question about some wires under my hood.
I can't help you with the "crap mounted to the radiator support", but I am running an electric fan on my 327. Keeps the motor cool in this desert heat, even when it's 100+ outside. 16" fan from Coolcraft. Pulls 2025 cfm. Hope this helps.

Re: Question about some wires under my hood.
The little box sounds like a circuit breaker perhaps. Black wire w/ white stripe (18g) maybe ammeter. My guesses.....

Re: Question about some wires under my hood.
It's either an inline fuse or breaker. Had 2 spade connections with a flat head screw terminal. I know what the horn relay is, it's a relay
I was more concerned with the ceramic box. I think I found it on the diagram, I will look again and point it out. Thanks for the guesses. Speaking of fans, I found a set of duals off an LS. Anyone try something like that on a non LS? Not sure on the size, but it looks nice. <edit> Pics help:

Re: Question about some wires under my hood.
You know, I was just looking at swapping my alternator to the other side last weekend. Hmmm, thanks for the pic. I found a nice dual 12" setup that might be perfect. I need to take some measurements tonight.

Re: Question about some wires under my hood.
You have a black/white wire on the drivers side, and a black one on the pass side. They are both fused.
according to this diagram, they goto nothing http://www.dartez.com/images/70/diagram2.GIF I'm not sure if were talking about the same wire here, but thats what it sounds like

Re: Question about some wires under my hood.
I'm really hoping someone can comment in and tell us what this wire actually does
