I'm having a problem with my brakes. When I hit the brakes hard, the rear brakes lock up hard and the tail wants to come around. I don't have disc brakes but do have power. Is this an adjustment problem or what?
Also, I have a 292 ci with a single barrel carb. I have to keep turning the fuel mixture screw in to raise the rpm as it keeps backing out and will run rough or shut down. Is there supposed to be a spring on the screw? What can I do to get this to work properly? Thanks to all. As you can tell, I'm not really a wrench but I'm trying.

I think there should be a spring on the screw on the carb. Not sure what to do about the brakes other than adjusting the front and back ones.

Re: 67 c-10
Exactly what my 68 GMC was doing. Rear brakes were glazed and were extremely grabby. I'd scare the you know what out of everybody when I had to stop at a stoplight real quick. I took the power brake booster off and it still did it.
I redid my whole brake system: Got all my parts together one Sat. and finished it all on Sunday. Take a wheel/drum off and measure it. They make two sizes and they will ask you which one you have. I took the drums and had them redone ($7 each). Got new brake shoes front and back. Bought new brake wheel cylinders. New spring kits. Three rubber brake line hoses -2 in the front and 1 in the rear. While I was at it, I replaced front wheel bearings and seals and put the power brake booster back on. No more scaring little old ladies and it stops really good. |

Thanks Shyguy and GMSee. I will try to find a replacement spring for the carb. I will also see about redoing the brakes. Sounds like a complete brake job is in my future. Thanks all for your help.

Re: 67 c-10
Grabby brakes can also mean an axle seal is shot. Allowing gear oil to get on the drums and shoes. Most cases you can't tell since the drum covers everything up.
