Anyone around Austin, Texas......

.....want to help me re-jet a quadra-jet? Runs great, but is running rich, and I believe the carb is from a 454. It now sits on a 350. I'll provide Shiner, or beverage of choice, and some carne of some sort on the grill. I've worked on 1 carb, and promptly caught it on fire. I'm North of Austin about 30 miles, and East of Georgetown about the same. If there are enough people (or any) who want to play, we could make a wrenching session out of it.
Thanks.

Re: Anyone around Austin, Texas......

You need to check what it's jetted and rodded at now. If you need to change it you need to match the jets and rods on the way down. You can't just change the jet or rod and have it work correctly. If that q-jet has the stock jets and rods it should be fine as is. If you post the number I might be able to find what it started out life as and what jets and rods are stock.

Check your timing. If the carb runs good thats where I would start. Good luck.

What makes you think it is running rich?

If it's not broken, don't fix it. There's a lot of people out there that pray for this in a q-jet. What kind of mileage are you getting?

Re: Anyone around Austin, Texas......

I haven't got it back on the road yet. Was wrecked by PO. Side swiped. i have a thread in the 4x4 section. i'm ready to tag and inspect it, just don't want to be dumping more gas than it can use. I'll try to get the numbers off the carb if i'm home tonight.

Re: Anyone around Austin, Texas......

If your smelling a little gas I would bet its more likely to be heat soak with the Texas heat than running rich.

Re: Anyone around Austin, Texas......

I have a freshly rebuilt quadrajet sitting in my garage that has the same thing- runs, idles, starts all good- but ran rich on the small block that it was on. I tried 3 differnt needles, I got it to were it wasnt running rich but it ran worse. I just took the carb and factory aluminum intake off and replaced it with a Holley 670 and a cheap ebay polished Pro Comp intake. Now after a little tweeking on the Holley it runs great!
