stock steel wheels

Just ordered 5 new q78 Super Swampers for my 1970 C20 4x4. The truck is a mostly original Fire Dept Brush Truck and was equiped with 16.5 x 8.25 steel wheels. Would like to keep the steel wheel factory look. Where should I look for 16 x 7 8 lug steelies? Stocton wants $140 a wheel and thats not in the budget. No luck on Craigs list. Im in Ventura County, CA. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Re: stock steel wheels

Check the larger tire shops in your area (non franchise ones are best)
I have had good luck with them being able to source steel like new "take offs" from warehouses that stock all those OEM take off wheels, people either give or credit the shop that just sold them fancy wheels and the shop sells them to warehouses.

Also, I have scored OEM wheels from body shops that customize new trucks for off road or street.

The wheels from the warehouse cost me 50 bones a pop, and the body shops it just depends on the day and who you talk to (I have made great deals on stuff like this just before the lunch hour).

Re: stock steel wheels

I've tried a couple local shops but they only are able to get the more modern wheels that were take offs. I really want the same wheels that were oem just in a 16x7. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Re: stock steel wheels

The fords and dodges had 16x7 steel wheel , if you don't mind them looking a bit different . Most don't know unless there setting side by side .

The fords and dodge wheels are $15.00 at the local pull-a-part.

Re: stock steel wheels

The good ole steel wheels that came on everything forever are no longer used on modern vehicles. That kills the whole new take-off thing. I'd look at the bone yards,Craigslist (try a WTB),etc. The other way for new wheels would be a commercial tire shop or trailer/equipment dealer. I have a set I bought new a while back from a business called Standard Wheel and Rim who sold any wheel for trucks, equipment,or trailers. That place is in PA. But,equipment trailers still use good old HD steel wheels. I actually bought my last set of 9.75 x 16.5s from that place when they had long dropped off the radar elsewhere. They were labeled as "trailer use". When I told the guy they were going on my truck he pointed that out. I said I wasn't worried about that since trailer wheel specs exceed those of passenger vehicles.

BTW,isn't Stockton Wheel out of business?

Re: stock steel wheels

Thanks for the responsws. 4 Wheel parts called today and said Interco was sold and the company that bought them will still be making the Q78x16's. They should be available the first half of September. I sure hope so.

Re: stock steel wheels

Did you call Stockton Wheel? I didn't realize they were back in business? Great news!

I hope Interco didn't sell. They are about the last company to make 16.5s and the best wheels for 8-luggers are 16.5

I ended up ordering Ford Econoline Van wheels, 16x7 8 on 6.5 for $59.00. I already have the original 16.5x8.25 that came on the truck but wanted a broader spectrum of tire sizes and a tire that would stay on the wheel at a lower psi. I spoke with Interco today and the Q78x16 molds were shipped to a new facility that will be molding them up (still Interco). Hopefully I will have my 5 new tires next month. Interco said they were not going to discontinue the old Q78. If your shopping for wheels Stocton wanted $140 per wheel and three to four weeks lead time.

Re: stock steel wheels

Yeah,Stockton is stupid expensive and so is Rally America, but worse. It's one thing if you want something built that "has to be" custom. But,to pay custom prices for something that is out there already is nuts. I have the Ford wheels on my '72 GMC,now, with 235/85s until I lift it. I said the best wheels are 16.5 meaning the best styles in wide 8-lug wheels. If someone would just come out with steelies and aluminum slots in wide 16" they'd sell like hotcakes.

As has been stated, the Ford and Dodge wheels will fit. The center hole is a little larger, but no biggie. Very easy to find. Here is mine with Ford 16X6 wheels. I just sanded them and sprayed them with Rustoleum gloss white. I got them with the little nipples to fit the hub caps, too...

Just an fyi, according to their sales rep, Wheel Vintiques does not offer a 6 lug wheel, with nubs for hubcaps, in the OE steel wheels.

Yeah, they are a bit better than the other two I mentioned. I looked at that place before. Would it kill them to take a picture of each actual wheel they offer? They just show the same picture for every width.
