What does this knob do?

The title should imply that this question is probably going to be stupid...

To the right of the ignition in my 66 c10 there's a knob exactly like the wiper knob. It's not connected to anything and there's so many loose wires under the dash (p.o. put in a lot of wire mess with the speaker/stereo/misc. accessories and then seems to have painted them all black...) I'm not sure which, if anything it should connect to.

Owners guide says it's a "Cigar Lighter (when used)", but I don't see how this knob would be that. Should this knob even be there? I'm tempted to just pull it out.

Re: What does this knob do?

A pic would get you more attention. I don't know if its factory or an add on.

Re: What does this knob do?

woops. knew I was missing something

It rotates left and right with the little button in the middle that rotates it back to center. Doesn't pull out or push in at all.

Re: What does this knob do?

Looks like somebody installed the wiper/washer switch in the location originally reserved for the cigarette lighter.
Switch layout going from left to right should be:

Headlights
Wipers
Choke
Ignition
Cigarette lighter

Re: What does this knob do?

So it's probably just a placeholder then? Everything else is where it should be, including the working wipers knob on the left.

Screw it, I'm just gonna pull it out then.

Do not push that button! http://youtu.be/kfj0sRiEqx4

Seriously though, if it only goes left or right, sounds like a wiper motor switch. Why would there be two? Who knows, maybe just to fill an extra hole left by a broken lighter?

That's what I'm thinking at this point. There's also a toggle switch that looks like it used to control the horn (which is missing) and a number of other random additions that don't seem to do anything anymore so I dunno. Just trying to clean up the mess

Thanks everyone for the input.

Re: What does this knob do?

I'd push it to the limits.

There is a plastic block off plug for that opening when no cigarette lighter was optioned. Others have used the opening for the Signal Stat hazard switch. Casco manufactured the lighters for GM. I've seen two versions, one with a light to illuminate the housing when the lighter is removed and one housing without the light.

It's a nipple switch touch it and see if it works?

Re: What does this knob do?

I'd leave it, having a button there would look better IMO than having a blank. If there's an actual switch there, you could see if it works.. and find something to hook it up to... interior light, a buzzer (for fun), neon underdash lighting (kidding), or something creative. Put a little label under it that says "eject".

Re: What does this knob do?

It would be a windshield wiper switch and that button would be the washer fluid switch. it was a common setup on older style cars.

You need two tools in life: duct tape and WD-40. If it moves and it shouldn't, you use duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, you use WD-40.

Re: What does this knob do?

This switch had no wires attached. I did find the wire for the cigar lighter tucked up and taped away under the dash. Since the wiper switch on the left works just fine I went ahead and I swapped this switch out this morning

Needs cleanup, but it'll do for now.

Re: What does this knob do?

that is the signal stat 103 0r 105 switch for 4 way flashers, but there should be a wiring harness with it that connects into your wires that come out of the str column

That was the Hyperspace button.

I like your arrangement a lot better.
