help

help i have a 1970 chevy truck that i ben working on and i am trying to hook up my amp gauge to a one wire alternator the way i have it now is i have a wire comeing from the altnator and a wire from the headlight switch to the charge side and a wire from battery to the discharge side when i hook the battery up and turn the light switch on the needal gose the d side and when i start up the truck the needle gose to the charge side and stays but my understandig is the needle suppose to go back to the middle when the engine is at idle. i want my factory gauge to work right and not burn up my truck i hope someone can help with this
