header gasket replacement ??

So I find myself with a header gasket leak on passenger side...looks like a fairly easy job (see pic)... my questions are 1) is there a better gasket than most or are they all the same 2) do I need to completly remove the header or are the gaskets able to slide into place if I just loosen the bolts enough to pull the header back and slide the old gasket out and new gasket in the tighten down 3) never done a header gasket any tips or tricks?

Re: header gasket replacement ??

I like the percy's aluminum gaskets. i always blow through the thin areas of the composite ones. You don't need to completely remove the header. If you loosen the collector flange bolts you should be able to swing it away from the motor a bit. The holes on the ends of the header gaskets are slotted so you can get the 2 end bolts started without the gasket in the middle, and slide it over after you have 2 end bolts threaded.

Re: header gasket replacement ??

I replaced mine not long ago. I used Hookers gaskets probly not the best but they were fairly priced. I had to scrape off the old gasket on the header flange and the engine block . Also get some collector gaskets in case you need to replace them. Just my 2 cents

Re: header gasket replacement ??

I use Mr Gasket Ultra Seal gaskets. They work great with no leaks, and you can re-use them several times. They're the gray ones with a steel mesh inside them. .02

Re: header gasket replacement ??

ok thanks guys, so I just need to remove the header bolts, take out the old gasket, if I dont have to scrap off any of it from the header and then just install the new gasket?.. what is the average cost for the gaskets?

Re: header gasket replacement ??

I recommend using the metal foil type manifold gaskets. I've never had a problem with using them with headers and they are ultra cheap. (comes in a gasket set if you have one)

If you really want to go all out, give them a smear of RTV on both sides before installing. (but not needed)

You won't be blowing these out anytime soon!
