Fan Shopping

I have decided (with a LOT of help from other members) that I should get a 7 blade clutch fan. I will probably get one from Summit Racing. Is there different temperature clutches? What is the best type of clutch (i.e. thermal, non-thermal, heavy duty thermal, severe duty thermal)? What is the best brand of fan? What is the best brand of clutch? I just saw an exploded clutch fan and don't want that to happen.

Thanks for all of your help.

Re: Fan Shopping

Dunno about different temperature ratings, have never heard of that. Definitely get thermal -- probably don't need severe duty unless you will be working the truck extremely hard. For general all-around use, I'd get a heavy-duty thermal.

Me neither. I was just wondering if there was such a thing.

Re: Fan Shopping

I was just looking at Summit Racing again. They don't have a 7 blade, 18 inch fan. Where should I get one?

Re: Fan Shopping

mechanical is cheaper, more dependable, generally quieter, and move a crap load of air.

I would locate a fan from a wrecking yard. Don't get the ones with flex blades, GM used some stock for a few years, but they started snapping just like the blue ones from jegs/summit.
I know NAPA's HD clutch will move some seriouse air. When the clutch locks up, there is hardly any slippage, it goes from freewheeling to locked up in an instant. It's enough to bog the motor. I only recomend that one for a seriouse work horse truck.
I think a normal duty, thermostatic clutch is the best deal for normal driving.

Re: Fan Shopping

long or short waterpump? I have a fan for a long water pump setup with a clutch on it. I went to a short water pump to be more original.

Let me know if your interested in buying a used one

Re: Fan Shopping

I got one from a 75 Monte Carlo and put it on my 454 project. WOW that thing moves the air! I just bought a new clutch for it from Advance but that $5 dollar fan sure works great!

Yup. Just measure so you'll know it fits.

fwiw, in the 34 years I have owned it, my truck has never overheated with its OEM 7-blade 18" clutch fan.
