Vortec motor and 72' SWB A/C ????

Hey guys,

I have a 72' SWB with a 96' Vortec motor in it. I would like to run the factory A/C componets of the 96' motor with the truck. I have searched all day on here, and came back with minimal results. Can someone please tell me what all I can run from the 96' motor and vehicle, and what I will have to buy aftermarket? Thanks so much!!

Which compressor is stock on that motor ( A6?) and where is it mounted?

Re: Vortec motor and 72' SWB A/C ????

Well it's the 1996 Vortec 5.0, and I couldn't tell you off hand. It had the motor and tranny(4L60E) in it when I bought it. My friend said he has the compressor and all of that stuff that will fit it. As far as what compressor and mounting location, I don't know yet, I haven't put it on there, LOL. I was trying to find out as much info as I could, before I told him I wanted it and everything. Sorry I came un-prepared. Still have any insight with my lack of knowledge on it? Thanks.

I'm not sure if you are trying to adapt the newer 1996 compressor, condenser, dryer, and lines to the factory 1972 AC system, but if so, you should be able to use the 1996 compressor, but that is about it I would think. You will very likely have to have hoses made and find fittings to adapt the newer compressor to standard O-ring AC fittings. I bought most of my hard to find fittings from docblocks.com. That may be a good place to start once you know what fittings you are looking for to mate up to that compressor.

The compressor mounts on the driver side above the power steering pump. I would imagine you would need custom made discharge and suction lines made. You need to get your hands on a 96-99 truck to see what may work and what wont work... The condenser, evaporator, and orifice tube should work its the lines that would need to be made to fit,,, subscribed to see what happens

Re: Vortec motor and 72' SWB A/C ????

Ok thanks a lot guys. good info here. My friend just had a vortec go out on him, and said I could get all the stuff I wanted off of it. My neighbor can make the lines (He has some pretty cool/handy tools). It will be a little while before I make it happen though, I just pulled everything apart, and in the process of a frame off, and starting the body work. I am one of those people that like to know everything ahead of time though. I knew the compressor and stuff would work, but was unclear on the condenser, orfice, evaporator, and the inside unit and stuff. Thanks again. I will probably start my build thread this next week when I get it moved again.

Re: Vortec motor and 72' SWB A/C ????

For the alternator you will need a 5 watt 80 ohm resistor if you dont use the charge lamp from the 96. I learned the hard way and fried the alternator. Summit sells it Ill look for the part number... also the power steering pressure line you need to cut and re-flare for the gearbox on your 72. Everything else should bolt up to your vortec engine no problem...lower radiator hose should be the same as a 72, upper hose may be a problem unless you dont mind a flex hose like I used... Ill be looking for the build thread
