Replacing sport Mirrors, does the door panel need to come off?

I need to install a new exterior mirror and want to know what im getting into.
Do you need to remove the interior door panel to replace the mirror?

What type of mirrors are you replacing? Usually there are backing plates on the inside of the door.

Yeah I'm replacing the sport mirrors, so if I take the mirror off will the backing plate fall?
