72 chevy 16.5 wheels, original?

Just bought a 72 chevy c20 that has a set of 16.5 wheels with factory dog dish caps... Are these original? I know I don't have a pic but I'm not picking it up til this weekend. Thanks for any help.

If it is a 3/4 ton or 1 ton chasis, then you should have 8-lug, 16.5 inch rims as stock equipment. The center caps are unique to these rims, as they have a larger diameter than the 1/2 ton caps.

Yeah,and the 16" wheels were split rims and a heavier option.

Sorry, yes 8 lug. Are they desirable at all as I was gonna hang the caps on the wall and probably let the wheels go, when I'm done parting, to the scrap...

Don't scrap them. Become a subscribing member and sell them here on the board. How wide are they? I'm looking for a set of 16.5 x 9.75's.

Alright, all paid up... I'll let you know the width when I get it home. A few other notables on the truck is the factory tach, beautiful original paint tailgate and a really nice grill and grill shell. Typical rust but not terrible, worth way more than I had to give for it!

odds are the wheels are next to worthless.
Hardly anyone makes 16.5 tires anymore. People are swapping over to 16 inch to save the headache. Very few will ever spot the difference.
The hubcaps are probably worth more than the wheels.

This is an important point to mention. An experienced tire installer should be able to instantly spot the difference between a 16 and a 16.5 wheel (different bead seat angle and shape), but that may not be the case anymore due to the dwindling use of the 16.5.

It is possible to mount a 16.5 tire on a 16" rim (and vice versa). Both create a dangerous situation in which the tire can/will blow off the wheel when airing it up or at some point later. Nearly 30 years ago I ran a tire fleet service truck for a local company. After I left, the guy who took over my position was mounting up some pickup tires and mounted a 16" tire on a 16.5 rim. It blew up and he lost his right leg at the knee. It is important to pay attention.

I was actually talking about the truck guys... I would hope a tire guy could ID them at a glance... but I suspect you are right.

All depnds on the truck some say 16.5's are junk and some will take the 16.5 over 16's because of the missing ridge on the wheel.Heck 10 years ago you had guys saying better get new wheels because the tire's can nolonger be found and guess what you get still get them.

Like me I have new tires in stock that way I never have to worry about not finding tires.

you can still find them, but they are getting harder to locate (stock size/street tread). 16's can be found in many many sizes and makes and models.
It's kinda like rebuilding an eaton rear (when originality doesn't count). Sure, it's strong as an ox, but why spend twice as much to rebuild it, when you are so limited in gearing and can't get new drums, when you can modify a 14 bolt to fit in it and have it rebuilt for 1/2 the price?
