Half cab soft top??
I have a k-line soft top and i'm not a big fan of how it slopes in the rear.
Has anyone seen a soft top version of a half cab and tonneau cover?? I'm considering converting my top into a half cab style top that attaching it to a tonneau cover for the rear. Any ideas pictures or am I just off the wall bat sh*t crazy on this idea........ its been known to happen... Thanks, Richard

Re: Half cab soft top??
i'm considering modifying it to the half cab style or selling it and some other spare parts (axles, tires/wheels, two hard tops [one busted one good]) to buy a softopper in black.
I assume the PM wasn't a BUY" pm? Please do not turn this into a for sale thread. Per the rules. Thanks

Re: Half cab soft top??
I am planning to try to build the same thing but It will be a few months before i can start working on it. One thing you will need to do is modify your rear seat or buy one that folds down. I modded mine i can post some pics if anyone is interested. I hope some others have thoughts or ideas as well.

Re: Half cab soft top??
Post a picture blue 69, did you keep the arm rests?
I was thinking of attaching it to the roll bar and having the back window portion zip out. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Half cab soft top??
ok. this is the best way i could come up with to make the rear seat fold down and still look somewhat factory. First i made a tube to go from the tube the armrests mount on down to the bottom bolt that holds the two halves of the seat together. I tried to use 3/4 electrical conduit but it kinked when making tight a radius so i got some iron water pipe. The iron pipe made did not kink as easy. Next i cut some flat plate to use as half of my hinge. I attached this to the bottom of the seat back and shaped it to match the curve on the back of the frame and matched the curve of my newly made armrest support. Then i welded an ear on to the new support tube that served as the other half of the hinge. I drilled them both and put a 1/2 inch bold through. I slotted the top hole on the seat bottom and slotted the bottom hole of the seat back so that they interlock when the seat is up. I used some old brake caliper bolt bushings on the bolts that fit into my slotted holes. The most important thing is the width. All of this has to fit between the wheel wells and its a tight fit. Hopefully the pics help i'm not very good at explaining my ideas.

Re: Half cab soft top??
My rear seat folds down but it doesn't look factory. It also comes out like the newer suburban third row seats, since that is what it is. I wanted something to fold down so I could run my halfcab, but I never put the top on it so I ended up selling the cab. I think it could look factory though if you chose the right pattern and material.

hotrodhomi, The suburban seat is also a good idea. I'm sure you could get an upholstery shop to cover one to look original. And with some modification you could probably even attach the bars for the factory armrests to newer burb seat suspectdon, I have a bunch of ideas in my head about the top. I probably wont get time to work on it until this winter. I don't plan on running a roll bar so attaching to that is out for me.

Re: Half cab soft top??
I'm really interested in see if anyone has made a soft top version of a half cab, I hope I didn't make it sounds like I would make it into a for sale add.

Blue 69, about 10 years ago there was a hot rod magazine custom ink drawing of a wheel drive with a retractable hard top like that two wheel drive roadster pick-up, I'm thinking something like that but for a soft top.

Re: Half cab soft top??
my blazer didnt come with a rear seat so i got a seat from a late 80s blazer that folds and flips forward. I made brackets for it to latch into. the seat is a little lower then the factory style but works. Also my blazer came with a half top soft top/ tonnue. i cant find pics of it on this computer but ill try to get some up

71rat, that top is awesome! Does it have a manufacturer's name on it some where or is it a one off custom?

Re: Half cab soft top??
71Rat, that top is similar to what i have in mind for my blazer. It looks pretty cool do you have any pics of it on the truck?
The easiest way to get the fold down seat would be to measure the width and go to a u-pull it junk yard and find one. If you want it to look close to original get some armrest bars and arm rests from an original blazer seat and figure a way to fasten them on. I did realize after seeing a couple of seats for sale that the 72 armrest bars are different than the ones that i have. The 72 ones dont look wide enough to let the back fit between them. The bars on my seat flare out wide enough to let the back fit between the armrests. I also have the top that i cut off a truck cab that I had an idea to build a foldable hard top. But to carry this in the back of the truck i would have to remove the rear seat. The idea is still floating around in my brain though.

Re: Half cab soft top??
the top looks to be made by a boat top shop (no name or label on it) Sorry I do not have a picture of it on the truck. The truck came with a kayline top witch i sold (stupid decision on my part) and i sold the bed rail brackets with it and the snaps that went into the windshield. When it was on it was great because if u wanted the top off i folded the top down and tucked it twords where the rear seat would be, and when you needed the top unfolded it. The only thing that it needed was bows to support the center section above the rear seat. it was just a little flappy going down the road.
I just got back from camping but i'll get pictures up soon of how the rear 80's k5 seats fit in the rear of our first gens.
