Re: Whats the best way to clean out a gas tank

Go to eastwood.com i think was the site. and they make a 3 atage kit that me and my dad used before. You put the first chemical stage in there and eats at the buildup, then flush it out with like a water hose, then the second stage is a neautralizer then you flush it out, and the third stage is like a sealer. Thats the best way. If you dont have time you can use one of those power washer type sprayers at those little pull in car washes. Just stick it in the tank and rinse til your content.

Re: Whats the best way to clean out a gas tank

i've used my pressure washer to get stuff loosened up first/then a solution of oxalic acid(swimming pool suppliy section) let soak half hour or so// then rise out with pressure washer again// drin and blow out with compressed air or exhaust from a shopvac

if extremely rusty ,i'd finish off with POR tank sealer

Old school trick is to add some rocks to the empty tank, and to shake the tank to break loose anything that shouldn't be inside it. Of course, you should have already removed the pickup/sending unit. Oh, remove the rocks when you're done.

Was this the kit you were talking about NuttinSpecial?

I'm debating between that and taking it to a radiator shop.

Yeah, but how do you know you got all the rocks out?

I've heard of people using ice, because it melts and you can pour it out.

I just take a piece of chain, put some bolts though it with nuts on them. Drop that down in there, and have a girl with big boobs shake it all around.

I would say when the rattling stops when you shake the tank, they're all out.

Sorry Man i dont remember, its been about 5 years since we did it, thats where we got it and my dad said it was about $40 and it was enough to do 2 tanks. We had to wash 2 for an old jaguar and it was only 3 steps, if thats the only one on the website they may have replaced it with that 4 step one but that seems a little pricey

Re: Whats the best way to clean out a gas tank

Used to be a company named Hirsch that had a gas tank sealer. It was what was used, after you got all of the rocks out of the tank. And, you'll know you got all of the rocks when it doesn't rattle any more. Oh, don't use gravel....get some that are about half the diameter of the biggest hole you use to put them into the tank.

Re: Whats the best way to clean out a gas tank

Hey Randy, the old fellow down at D&G radiator will boil it out and seal it for $100. The option I took on the 36 tank was to wash it with my hot water washer, cleaning the remaining gummy crap with MEK and finally made it look like new clean metal filling it with muratic acid (swimming pool cleaner). Flushed it again with hot water for about an hour and then after a day the inside flash rusted and made a perfect surface for the por-15 tank sealer I coated it with. If you have it sealed make sure to use a sealer that will stand up to our crappy gas that has ethanol in it. If not it will turn the tank sealer to goo and create a whole new problem.

Re: Whats the best way to clean out a gas tank

1st depends on how bad of shape the tank is. I've used a 3 foot length of log chain in some tanks and shake well then rinse for long time then let dry out in sun. I like to use a clear plastic inline fuel filter inbetween the fuel pump and carb. that way I can monitor any residue that may collect in the filter. jmo

Re: Whats the best way to clean out a gas tank

taking to a rad shop is the best bet. They don't boil them out, all that would do is clean the olf fuel and paint off, along with the protective coating in there originaly. It would leave the rust uneffected though. They'll probably use a steam cleaner and flush it for an hr, then either cut it open and gind the rist, or use the chemicals described already.
A new tank is an option, but not the best option. The replacement ones are thin, and don't bolt up properly. The original fits.

Funny....my best friend did this and it worked AWESOME!! You can even use ceramic stones or some other media if the "rock" concept is hard to get past.

I've seen it done with a short link of chain too ... drop it in along with the chemicals ... shake like hell ... dump it out.

After you get you chain and chemicals in your tank, duct tape it up, put it in back of you daily driver truck for a week. It will do the work for you.
