Anyone have any good tips for keeping mice out of my engine compartment on my 02 silverado? The truck had been sitting for about 2 weeks when today I was under the hood checking the oil and just so happened to check the air filter and found this.

Man that sucks!! I wouldn't be to happy with that. The best i could give you is to leave poison and traps around if its going to keep sitting like that.

Most of the baits you use require the animal to eat almost half of its body weight in poison. If a mouse eats a lethal dose, its very unlikely that the neigbor's cat can get a lethal dose by eating that dead mouse. You could place glueboards and snap traps inside the engine compartment. But, a couple of bait stations near the truck and along rodent runways should do the trick.

Where did he get the nesting material from, is that home insulation?

I fought with those buggers off and on several winters ago on my old, beloved 88 2500 Chevy. I finally got Decon and moth balls and scattered it everywhere under the hood and underneath the truck. That seemed to have worked for me. I now have a couple of outside cats and one of them is a hunter--so far rodents have stayed away!

I really could care less about the cat, because that nieghbor walks his dog in my ditch every morning. More or less wondering about items that I could place in the engine compartment that wouldn't fall off when I drive the truck. Some of the insulation is from the underside of the hood and some is from the firewall. I havent had any wiring damage yet , or had them inside the truck. I do have alot of small red squirrels that hang around my house (lots of pine trees) so maybe a pellet gun is the answer?

Sometimes you can get lucky like I did when the mouse just happened to be resting between the alternator belt and pulley when I started the truck.

You can visualize what the result was yourself. It was also had the added effect of cool sound effects.

It doesn’t look like a mouse to me. Most mouse nests have the stuff chewed up like fine confetti. With the big chunks of insulation I see, I think it’s more like the red squirrels you mentioned. A pellet gun is a good solution or get a rat (not mouse) snap trap and super glue a kernel of corn or a peanut to it. Peanut butter may work too. The squirrels don’t like to be out in the open, they like cover for safety from the hawks. Can you mow any tall grass in the area and trim brush back? They’re probably climbing up your front tires, so put the traps next to the tires and make sure there is no brush nearby that they can climb up to get into your engine compartment that way.

Mice don't like the smell of bounce fabric sheets- it seems to keep them away. those friggin things like to eat the injector wires also! We were told by Chevy dealer to put the bounce in where you don't want them and they will stay away! Has worked well for me!
P.S. it's something only in bounce other brands don't seem to work.

What happens if they eat the bounce sheets, does it make their fur nice and soft?

That looks more like a rat's work. I'd say find the opening he's getting in and cover it with some stainless steel wire mesh.
I had a similar deal with a new riding mower. It ran good when I tested it but like crap when I began using it at home. Removed the air cleaner top to find much the same thing. The paper filter had been totally chewed up and had the airway blocked causing it to flood. Even some of the rubber gasket was chewed away.

I had the same problem with a large rat. I used peanut butter on a snap trap and was going to let the truck sit for a few days. While I was looking it all over the rat poked its head out between the fender and coolant bottle then retreated into the fender. I was able to open the passenger door and see the back of it. I slide a pellet gun into the hole and solved the problem. Here is my original post:
